In my opinion, Gandhi was an excellent and quite accurate representation of Mahatma Gandhi's life. Many of the locations and events that took place in those locations were rather convincing, (at least for someone who has never left the United States). For the amount of information in the film, the directors did a decent job of keeping it short, however there were some parts that were just too long and unnecessary. I am well aware that directing and acting in the film's time period were much different than the fast paced, to the point kind of movies we have today, that being said, for most people the movie is a bit long most likely even for back then. (Hence the intermission). The transition from event to event was a little disorga
...nized and not well explained, therefore leading to a bit of confusion that I later on my own had to clarify.
The acting was another aspect that could have been a little better, some of the acting was so bad it actually took away from what they were trying to convey in the movie, especially deaths. I couldn't help but laugh at times. Actor Ben Kingsley, was the exception to the other bad actors. He not only looks identical to Gandhi, but also played the role with seriousness and to the best of his ability, making it more accurate. Personally, I would not recommend this movie to someone just for their viewing pleasure, it is honestly hard to focus and not enjoyable.
In a class setting however, it is a great way to learn about the timeline of Gandhi and th
truth about what was going on in India and Pakistan. It really did accurately portray the relationship between the Muslims and the Hindus, especially when they were both migrating after the border change. It also taught me that Gandhi wasn't always a bald hippie guy trying to get peace everywhere he went. He had become that way after traveling, seeing all the bad that there was in the world.
Overall the movie was a great educational tool that furthered my understanding about not only Gandhi himself, but the conflicts among countries, religions, and ethnicities in that time period. I would highly recommend the film to any teacher looking to not only make their class happy by giving them a movie day, but also further their understanding of the events and conflicts that happened in Gandhi's Life. Although some of the acting is not so great and the length is at times unbearable, the story itself is filled with information crucial in the understanding of Mahatma Gandhi and the period in which he lived and died.
