Teachers are responsible for shaping the minds of young individuals who will become future leaders and shape the destiny of the world and their country. It is their critical duty to ensure that children receive comprehensive education, despite instances of deviance and lack of literacy within communities. There is increasing concern over who should be held accountable, particularly in light of recent assessment tests revealing a rise in functional illiteracy among American elementary and high school students, as well as declining achievement overall in essential subjects like English, Science, and Math compared to previous years.

Ingersoll's 2007 article "Short on Power, Long on Responsibility" questions whether it's fair to blame teachers for the decline in education.
