Name of activity: Fruit salad
Size and age of group Three children aged between 2 and 4.
Aim of activity Experience and have the opportunity to play with natural ingredients and eat the salad children made afterwards.. Encourage creativity and encourage personal preferences. Parallel play and group Piles/Spice
Physical: Develop fine motor skills by using hands and fingers peel the fruit, grasp the knife to cut the fruit in pieces. Develop body co-ordination. Learn about the ingredients' texture unpeeled and peeled.
Learn about smells of ingredients on their own and when mixed together. Develop a sense of how ingredients look on their own and when cut and mixed together.
Intellectual: Learn how to concentrate on one task until completion. Learn how to solve problems if the dough becomes too sticky etc. by learning which ingredient should be added. Le
...arn concepts of volume, weight and properties of ingredients such as liquid, powder, etc.
Language: Introduce new words: liquid, soft, hard, thick, thin, shape names such as round, square, numbers for how many different type of fruit is being used and how many pieces is cut into.
Talk together as a group describing what they are doing and if they are enjoying. Ask what is their favourite fruit. Listen and follow instructions.
Emotional: To be able to express their feelings while peeling, cutting and eventually eating the salad.
Social Communication: Learning to share ingredients. Taking turns in using the ingredients and give turn to the child who has not done the activity yet. Area where activity will take place On a table. Equipment and material needed 1 plastic chop board to share. 3 bowls to contain the cut salad plus 1 plate to contain the fruit's
skin. children knives. Napkins. Preparation before start the activity (staff/parents discussion) Make sure none of the children are allergic to any of the ingredients.
Health & Safety
Wash hands before starting activity. Use round and not pointed knives. Wipe any spillages to avoid slip hazard. Children to wash hands once finished the activity. How I know if children have enjoyed activity and whet they said. Some of them wore the jewelleries they designed and made, others said they loved making monster faces, making pizza, sausages and mixing ingredients.
How activity went and any changes for next time.
Children enjoyed activity from beginning to end. Some children ate their fruit salad, others did not. Use different fruits. Anti-discriminatory/anti-bias practice.
