This poem by Martin Espada examines the growth of Tony from elementary school to law school. Each stanza illustrates different aspects of his life and his journey towards self-discovery. The poem highlights the significance of experiencing diverse facets of life to find fulfillment. When Tony was approximately nine years old, his father disappeared (Barnet & Sylvan, p. 656), which drastically changed his life. Consequently, Tony had to support his family by finding work at the Bodega, even though it wasn't part of his original plan. Despite facing numerous challenges, he eventually overcame poverty and pursued a legal education with the help of a scholarship.

Furthermore, as Tony grew older, he lacked a paternal figure who could offer guidance in his life. Similarly, in today's world, many young boys also face the absence of a fatherly influence during their upbringing.
Tony's unwavering vision and ambition for a better future remained steadfast even while he worked at Bodega. In today's competitive society, there are numerous pressures that can easily divert one's attention. Like Tony, it is crucial to stay focused on personal goals and work towards them. However, society often becomes complacent with their current state of life due to opposing factors, relinquishing their once cherished visions. Ultimately, Tony's story demonstrates the realization that true happines
does not come from wealth and fame but rather from being content.
In my own life today, we tirelessly strive for maximum wealth and fame in the shortest time possible. Society has become exceedingly materialistic, believing that these external sources will bring happiness. After receiving a scholarship to attend law school, Tony moved to Boston where he observed significant differences in societal and cultural values compared to his humble origins in the New York projects and his previous workplace at Bodega. The warmth he felt before was replaced by hostility and coldness in Boston.
However, after a short stay there, Tony recognizes the distinct beauty and uniqueness of his upbringing which contrasts with the experience he encountered in Boston. In comparison, life in the Dominican Republic evokes a tightly knit and interconnected community where individuals genuinely embrace the joy of belonging.Regardless of age or location, a sense of peace and security is present. This differs greatly from my encounters in America, where individuals primarily focus on their own concerns without much consideration for those around them.
