Ozzy was greatly inspired by the Beatles and aspired to have a music career similar to theirs.
Ozzy's first opportunity in music arose when he encountered a former acquaintance who had recently established a band called Approach, and they were in need of a vocalist. Ozzy believed he was the ideal candidate and convinced his father to purchase a $50 amplifier and microphone for him. However, Ozzy was not fond of Approach's style of music, so he decided to resign from the band.
Ozzy and Terrance Butler formed their own band, "Rare Breed," but it didn't gain much success. They put an ad in the newspaper and Tony Iommi and Bill Ward expressed interest. The four musicians joined forces and created a band called Polka Tulk. Originally blues and jazz with a "hard edge," the band later changed its name to Earth.
However, Earth wasn
't receiving enough recognition. One day, Terrance watched a horror movie called Black Sabbath in a theater. Afterward, he questioned why people would pay to be frightened. After discussing it together, the band decided to change their image to be more gloomy and dark, reinventing themselves as Black Sabbath.
Black Sabbath's debut album, released on Friday, February 13, 1970 via Vertigo records, was recorded in a mere 8 hours using two four-track machines. Surprisingly, the production costs for this album amounted to only $1,200. Ozzy Osbourne proudly showed the album to his father exclaiming, "Look, dad! It's me on a piece of plastic!" However, his father couldn't resist making a humorous comment, asking, "Are you sure you're only smoking cigarettes?"
The release of Black Sabbath's first album garnered them a large following
Bassist Terrance Butler was affectionately dubbed "Geezer," while the rest of the band became renowned for their music. A peculiar incident occurred one night when the band was approached by a witch who requested that they perform at a satanic ceremony. Politely declining the offer, the band found themselves under a spell as a result. To protect themselves, Ozzy requested his father to create crosses for everyone. Remarkably, Bill Ward is the sole member who still possesses his original cross among the band. Ozzy now adorns a 14-carat gold cross.
In 1977, Ozzy went through a series of unfortunate events that caused him to feel extremely depressed. Firstly, he was unhappy with Tony's increasing influence on the band. Additionally, Ozzy struggled with drug addiction, which consistently affected his mental state. To make matters worse, his father passed away, leaving Ozzy in emotional distress. In an attempt to find relief from his troubles, Ozzy decided to leave Black Sabbath. However, he eventually returned to the band to work together on their new album called "Never Say Die." Unfortunately, due to his persistent drug addiction, the band eventually had no choice but to part ways with Ozzy.
Ozzy stayed in a hotel room for half a year, engaging in regular drinking and drug use. His exit from the group left him overwhelmed with sadness. Sharon Arden, who is the manager's daughter, came to see him to settle a debt and saw firsthand how deeply distressed he was. This greatly affected her, and she felt an obligation to help him start over.
Ozzy, the creator of the band Blizzard of Ozz, embarked on a quest to secure a record
label contract. Eventually, CBS offered him $65,000 and arranged a meeting with their top executives. In preparation for this event, Sharon proposed that Ozzy make an impactful entrance by releasing three doves as a symbol of peace. Unfortunately, due to his intoxicated state, Ozzy made a peculiar entrance by sitting on a young girl's lap and tossing two doves in the air. Shockingly, he also bit the head off the third dove. CBS was taken aback by this outrageous behavior, leading newspapers to dub Ozzy as a lunatic. Nonetheless, CBS still proceeded with the release of Blizzard Of Ozz's debut album.
In the 1980s, Ozzy became infamous for his involvement in various events. At the end of his performances, he would throw animal hearts, brains, and intestines into the crowd. During one concert, a fan threw a live bat onto the stage which Ozzy mistakenly believed to be a fake prop. He bit off the bat's head only to realize it was real when it started flapping its wings. Reflecting on this incident, Ozzy exclaimed that it took him a lot of water to swallow the bat's head and that it still feels stuck in his throat after all these years. As a result, Ozzy had to be urgently taken to the hospital for rabies testing. Aside from these incidents, there was also an occasion when Ozzy tragically killed all seventeen of his cats with both a knife and a shotgun while he was drunk.
While intoxicated in 1982, Ozzy impersonated a woman and took photos in San Antonio, Texas. In his state of inebriation, he urinated on what he assumed was a partially demolished wall. However,
he later discovered that it was actually a section of the historic Alamo. Consequently, he faced a ban from entering the city until 1992.
Ozzy has reunited with Black Sabbath and has released numerous albums with them. In addition, he has also produced several solo albums. Each year, he holds a large concert called Ozzfest, which features over 20 bands.
