Effects of Acid Rain

Acid rain negatively impacts the environment by causing a range of harmful effects. It is created when the atmosphere receives wet and dry deposition, containing excessive levels of nitric and sulfuric acids. The burning of coal and fossil fuels by industries releases oxides that contribute to acid rain formation. Consequently, this acidic water has detrimental consequences like the depletion of fish populations in lakes and streams due to their inability to survive under such conditions.

Acid rain has a detrimental effect on our ecosystem, impacting plants, animals, and aquatic life. Nitrogen from acid rain results in the excessive growth of algae and plants, which is harmful. The harsh conditions weaken trees' systems, making them more vulnerable to pests and diseases. Moreover, acid rain deposits nitrates in forests, possibly increasing nitrogen levels.

n certain Eastern United States forest systems, there can be nitrogen saturation which prevents the full utilization of received nitrogen. The presence of nitrates further depletes calcium and magnesium from soils, indicating this saturation. As a result, continued nitrogen deposition has the potential to disturb nutrient balance in delicate forest ecosystems and alter the chemical composition of nearby lakes and streams. While acid rain harms plants and animals, it does not pose any health hazards to humans.

Acid rain has harmful particles that can damage human respiration and cause deterioration of buildings, monuments, and tombstones. This decay negatively affects the community by destroying historical monuments, erasing fragments of history, and potentially making it challenging for future generations to find their loved ones.
