The term "women's suffrage" means the right for a woman to vote in a general election. A suffragette was a member of the women's social and political union, they were a militant organisation that sometimes used violence whilst trying to achieve women's suffrage. The other political party involved in trying to get women's suffrage were called the suffragists and this party believed in a lot more sensible methods of getting the franchise to vote. This clash of tactics between parties caused inn depth rivalry and probably prevented women from getting the vote for a long time. Some historians believed if the suffragists and the suffragettes had worked together on getting women's suffrage it would have happened a lot earlier than it actually did.
Now that I have e
...xplained what a suffragette is I am going to assess what I have learned about source A and the reasons suffragettes were giving that they should have the vote and so should all women. Firstly I would like to point out that source A is a primary source as it was actually drawn by and advertised by the suffragette party. This source seems to portray women in a very good light and tries to show that men can be worse than women on many occasions. For example it shows a man who is the proprietor of white slaves who is allowed the vote even though his actions are inhumane and expose others in ways which could be classed as a cruel way they would still be allowed the vote.
Whereas there could be a gentle loving woman who is a mother to a child and has to spend every da
of her life working hard to raise her children and make sure the man of the house is catered to and she would not be allowed the vote.Another way in which this source shows the inequality between men and women is that it shows a drunkard man who probably wastes all of his weeks wage on getting drunk and not caring for his family at all but still getting the vote and then a woman nurse who does everything she can in life to help others and to care for others yet she still would not be allowed the vote. The quote "what a woman may be, and yet not have the vote" and the quote "what a man may have been; yet not lose the vote" also show that the suffragettes are unhappy with the way the system works.Extreme discrimination is being shown towards women it is a totally unfair system so they must demand more from it.
The ironic thing about this source I found was that it shows that a woman could be the mayor of a town or city which would require people to vote for her yet she would not be allowed to vote herself for the prime minister because she wasn't enough capable or she didn't have the mind capacity to vote but she had enough to be the mayor.I think that source A is definitely a helpful source in deciding whether women would of been able to vote or not but on the other hand because this source was written by a suffragette it is also a very bias opinion and some of the things probably were true
but there were many other things that the suffragettes were doing that were not mentioned in this poster. For example heckling, throwing stones and being rebellious at other party's meetings. The source also shows women contributing to their society and men not doing so whereas I am sure that the whole of Great Britain's work force was not alone women but men of higher standard contributing more than some women could. In conclusion I believe that source A does give a lot of reasons why women should be allowed to vote and some men who have done certain things or committed certain crimes should not be.
On the other hand though I think that this source is a very bias one and based on my own knowledge about the suffragettes they were not the most trustworthy of people and they should be thankful that the suffragists were around to help the cause.
