Across time, people have utilized diverse approaches, including both forceful and nonviolent methods, to challenge racism.
Founded in the 1960s, the Black Panthers in America advocated for using violence as a means to confront the Ku Klux Klan and were well-prepared and organized in their confrontation with police. Their emergence coincided with an increase in black discontent and anger towards police brutality and racism. As a response to this injustice, numerous young African Americans participated in riots throughout American cities. Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether their violent actions resulted in significant change.
Despite gaining attention and publicity, the violent demonstrations failed to achieve their desired goal of equality and raising awareness among racists. Instead, they fueled more hate and worsened the situation by attacking the very system and people they sought help from. This only gave more reason for discriminati
...on against them and painted an image of violence and unruliness.
In contrast, Martin Luther King chose a respectful and peaceful approach towards combating racism. He employed well-planned tactics that were within the bounds of law. His achievements surpassed those of the Black Panthers while causing significantly less bloodshed.
King's strategy involved transforming protests into crusades, elevating local conflicts to national moral issues. By appealing to white Americans' moral principles through peaceful protests, speeches, and activism, he made a profound impact on black lives in their quest for racial equality.
While his strategy may not have fully addressed global racial issues, it played a crucial role in making a difference.
He initiated a global wave of nonviolent movements, and I firmly believe that violence is not a suitable reaction to any circumstance. Violence is both incorrect and unethical. If someone is ignoran
enough to be racist, they are not deserving of our attention and energy. It is important to rise above such ignorance and do our utmost to disregard the offensive remarks they might make.
It is important not to stoop down and mirror the behavior of others who degrade you. The Bible is explicit in stating that violence is not acceptable and morally incorrect. If someone causes you harm, it is advised to respond by turning the other cheek. As mentioned in the Bible, Jesus did not retaliate or make threats when he was subjected to abuse and suffering.
Instead, he placed his trust in the one who judges fairly" (1 Peter 1:3-23).
