Over the past two decades, higher education, job markets and labor market demands for graduates have undergone significant changes. With today's competitive labor market, it has become increasingly difficult for graduates to secure employment. A survey conducted by University Putra Malaysia (UPM) revealed that many Malaysian employers highly value English communication skills in graduate candidates. Unfortunately, a vast number of recent graduates struggle with English proficiency which leads to unemployment - a problem that persists today resulting in 50,000 unemployed graduates. UPM's research highlighted critical thinking ability and excellent command of English as the top two requirements sought after by surveyed employers, making these abilities valuable assets to companies leading to career success and increased employability. In addition, soft skills such as IT proficiency and effective communication play an essential role in securing success within t
...oday's challenging job market. The UPM alumni center recently conducted a survey among 4,000 graduates about their language skills which found that both spoken and written English proficiency is considered essential by employers for effective communication with foreign clients while Malay language skills are not always necessary but emphasized specifically when dealing with local clients within retail industries. It is worth noting that poor English proficiency affects not only local graduates but numerous foreign graduates as well. Unemployment has adverse effects on the economy, causing a loss of potential goods and services that could have been produced. This decline impacts government income and gross domestic product (GDP) since fewer people pay taxes or spend money, ultimately leading to a decrease in overall economic activity. However, shopping can generate tax revenue which accumulates when everyone shops, thereby boosting the economy. During unemploymen
periods, individuals might be constrained in terms of funds for non-essential purchases if they rely solely on savings or benefits.
One possible solution to tackle an uneven industrial structure would involve balancing its development by nurturing strategic high-tech industries while recognizing traditional sectors like precision machinery and metal casting as highly competitive areas offering diverse employment opportunities. Although revitalizing traditional industries may promote employment opportunities, these sectors are currently experiencing a shortage of skilled workers due to vocational education's decline and university graduates' reluctance towards pursuing such career paths.
To address this issue, two possible solutions exist: students can consider internet marketing as an occupation involving promoting products on their websites while simultaneously searching for job openings. The Higher Education Ministry should establish a department or task force to monitor the learning environment and ensure that tertiary education aligns with current job scenarios. Regular assessments of higher educational programs and courses by the Ministry can produce competitive, valuable graduates for today's job market.
