Indonesia is located in Southeast Asia, it the largest archipelago country in the world, it is composed of approximately 17508 islands, it has 33 provinces and over than 280 millions people (Tourism in Indonesia, Wikipedia). As the fourth most populated country in the world, in 1990s Indonesia starts to develop in the tourism and service Industry (Tourism Development in Indonesia, (n. )). Now, Indonesia has become one of the most popular tourist destination, it has a lot of natural amusements places, unique various culture, the ethnic groups, the phenomenal spiciness of food, the unique tropical weather, the historical background of the country and still so many things that attract tourist to come, especially in Bali. Tourism in Bali has many negative impacts for the local society, culture, and environment.
Tourism in Indonesia is
...really developing; as it now develops there are some issues and controversial problems that come up. Most of tourists are attracted with the various culture of Indonesia, now the culture and social life are slowly changing day by day because of the influence of the tourists. Bali is the most famous amongst of other tourist destination places because of the unique culture and the natural beauty it has.
Nowadays the young generation in Bali fail to follow and respect the religious and ethical values in order to generate more income; prostitutions are now very common in the famous tourist places, they now also refuse to wear their own traditional cloth and tend to wear shorts and modern clothes which are forbid their culture (Tourism Development in Indonesia, (n. d)). Tourist overcrowds most of the sacred temples. Bali is also wel
known for its amazing traditional dance, but unfortunately there is a traditional dance of Bali that supposed to be shown only every 60 years, because it is consider s a sacred, but now it is shown in weekly basis because of the tourist demand (Wijaya. S, 2008).
Balinese people are very talented in making sculpture and painting, which tourist like to see and have, the sculpture and painting are originally made for the religious purpose, but now, they can buy it very easy and everywhere in Bali. Bali also provides various types of activities and accommodation for tourists to enjoy, but in fact they are resulting some negative impacts to the environment.
As it is now more and more well known around the world, businessman starts to open more and more hotels and resorts in Bali, and because of these construction, lots of people lost their house, because the company buy the land where they live in, so they need to move, also a luxurious resorts and spa are build close to the most sacred temple “Tanah Lot”, which is against the law that said any develop that is not related to religious purpose must be two kilometers away from the religious place (Wijaya. s, 2008).
There use to be lots of rice field, natural places for flora and fauna, but then now all turns to golf field, hotels, resorts, restaurants, and other building and places to satisfied the tourist’s needs. All the nature is all cut down and so the air is more polluted and the area also feels barren. Development of new hotels in Bali causing congestion in almost the
entire city of Bali, because there is a narrowing of the road will be undertaken, and make the dust were scattered everywhere, so that it becomes uncomfortable for the pedestrians and also pollute the air.
As more and more tourist come and enjoy the beaches in Bali, at the same time now those beaches are becoming dirty, before everything was clean, we can look through the water, now as everything becoming polluted, the water and the sand were not as cleaned as before. Tourism industry, including transport, hotels, restaurants, travelling service, and hospitality are the biggest in Bali that provides more quality employment, and it is also the fastest growing industry in Bali Island.
Many people are employed from small business to large business to support the tourism activity; it provides most of the jobs in Bali. Tourism is also contributing the major currency exchange rate in Indonesia. Most of the Balinese’s are economically depending on the tourism activity. Tourism plays a big role for Indonesian economic, especially Bali (Sugiyarto, G. , Blake, A. , & Sinclair, M. T. (n. d. )).
Every year, Bali’s hotels are all fully book, restaurants and amusement places are full of tourist and from here, government will get big benefit from the tax percentage, also from the exports and imports boost from the tourist that buys our goods. But, that’s how it supposed to work, while in fact not all tax goes to the government, sometimes tourist are also cheated, they want to have a good holiday with a good deal of price, so they cheated to just pay the local people to give them lower
price, so the tax isn’t included.
Tourism gives job to local people, but only in a low percentage and the job also not in the good position, they offer the good position to foreigner, they pay high for the foreigner, they gives them high position even though local people and the foreigner has the same capability of work, company prefer to take the foreigner, there’s possibility that they will choose local people, but they will gives a very low salary than foreigner. Bali is a very beautiful and popular place to visit, it will be better if both government of Indonesia and tourist can respect to conserve both of the environment and culture.
Culture and environment plays the most important for the tourism in Indonesia especially in Bali, because those what attract tourist to come and visit, that will help our economic growth, for better life for the local people that depend their financial on the tourism industry. Don’t demand what it is not supposed to be shown and what not supposed to have, don’t do what not supposed to be done because that could destroy the culture and environment. Both tourist and company must also respect the law to pay tax to the government in order for government to conserve the beauty of the nature of the places.
Company also need to see and respect the local people ability to work, pay them in the reasonable salary, not only taking the foreigner and push down local people salary, then the economic cycle will be run smoothly and it will also be more comfortable for tourist to come and visit the place.
