Demetrio Macisasis motivation for joining the Revolution was driven by a desire to satisfy his hatred for the local cacique in his hometown. “Demetrio is forced to abandon his family at a point when the government soldiers embark on a search for him prompting him to escape in the mountains where he forms a group of rebels that support the Revolution (Azuela 5-7).”
Marxist definition of revolution is based on the notion that the lower class revolts against the wealthy due to socioeconomic inequality. However, Luis Cervantes is a city aristocrat who joins with the band led by Macisasis (16). Cervantes although a wealthy city aristocrat, is annoyed by the injustice of his society prompting him to embrace the growing Revolution.
Luis Cervantes joins with the revolutionists in the fight to save his society from the crimes of the colonizers. As such,
...he serves as a clear example of a person who changed sides from supporting other aristocrats towards supporting the poor revolutionists. Cervantes was not only an aristocrat but equally a well-read medical student.
After the beginning of the Revolution and some stages in the Revolution, the process served in benefiting most of the locals. However, after Demetrio Macisasis snatches victory on Zacatecas from the jaws of defeat, his army, and his personal psychological state began declining prompting to the suffering of the town people (33). While initially, they drew motivation from the ideals of the revolution, the army now makes use of the revolution to perpetrate looting and murder. Blondie and War Paint, the new recruits are two classic examples that torture the town people without a reason.

and the resulting formation of an army comprising of other peasants serves as a notable example where a common man contributes to the Revolution.
