The Sean O'Sullivan Theatre of Brock University in Saint Catharines hosted the St. Catharines Chamber Music Society on Friday, January 18th, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. The performers on stage were Xiaollng Li, Andre Simard, Gordon Cleland, and Karin Di Bella, who played the violin, viola, cello, and piano respectively.
Charlotte Knight, the soprano, joined the performance and showcased a beautiful and vibrant music. The Sean O'Sullivan Theatre has a stage surrounded by curved seating arrangements, divided into five sections by four aisles. Positioned at the center of the stage is a grand piano that remains still until the spotlight focuses on it. Classical music brings a sense of calmness and anticipation among the audience. The first half of the program featured two compositions, including the Plano Quartet in E-flat major, K.
The two compositions that stood
...out to me were 493 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Die Geb?sche by Franz Schubert. Of the two, the first one left the greatest impression. It belonged to the classical period and was a chamber music. The quartet was reminiscent of a concerto and had three movements that reverberated throughout the performance. There was an interplay between the piano and string instruments which varied throughout the piece. The first movement was an Allegro in sonata-form. A radiant and amicable opening set the tone for the entire piece.
The sonata-allegro featured many small jumps, giving it a lively feel. In the second movement, the Larghetto, there was a captivating back-and-forth between the piano and string instruments. It began with a piano solo and eventually became somber, creating a sense of relaxation.
The final section of the piece was the Allegretto, a rondo
with a moderate tempo. The composition incorporates various hallmark features of classical music, such as balanced melodic phrases, dance rhythms, diatonic harmonies and tonic-dominant progressions, multimovement sonata-allegro forms, and homophony. By using violin tonic-dominant chords and homophonic structures, I ensured that the composition was evocative of the classical period, as opposed to the Baroque era. Additionally, the second half of the program included two other pieces: String Trio in C minor, Op. 9, no.
Two musical compositions that left a lasting impression on me are Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 and Gaetano Donizetti's La fille du rgiment. Of the two, I was particularly struck by Beethoven's work, which falls within the Classical era and is in the C minor key. Additionally, it is classified as chamber music.
Similar to Beethoven's other compositions, this piece was filled with emotional intensity. It followed a traditional trio format consisting of four movements. The first movement, Allegro con spirit, did not feature any specific instrument dominance but rather had a rounded structure with many emphatic chords that evoked strong emotions in the audience. The second movement, Adagio con expression, continued in a similar vein.
The section had a moderate pace and a range of fluctuating emotions that left me feeling somewhat somber and serious. It evoked a complex sensation, reminiscent of a struggle for survival. This segment concluded with a tranquil conclusion. The third movement, known as Scherzo Is allegro molto e vlvace, with an accelerating rhythm.
During the performance, I felt anxious and tense. However, it concluded with gradually diminishing volume and a magnificent coda. The final movement, Presto, was a Rondo with a soft ending. The homophonic structure of
the piece indicated that it was not from the Baroque period.
Attending this concert has given me a better understanding of classical music and how to distinguish its unique features. As a result, I am now able to appreciate a new genre of music more confidently.
