What is Working Long Hours?
Working long hours can be a necessary evil in certain industries and positions. The benefits of working longer hours are often clear; more work done, more money earned, and the potential to advance within an organization. However, there also are many drawbacks to working long hours that must be taken into consideration. The primary concern when it comes to working long hours is the effect it may have on one’s physical and mental health. Working too many hours can lead to physical exhaustion which can affect productivity and cause individuals to become injured while performing their job duties. Additionally, consistently working late nights or weekends can lead to sleep deprivation which can create a host of other problems including foggy thinking, poor decision-making skills, mood swings, and depression. Furthermore, consistently putting in extra time at work can have serious implications for personal relationships with family members who may feel neglected or unappreciated for all their sacrifices if an individual is never around due to work commitments. In order for employers and employees alike to get the most out of any situation involving long hours of work there needs to be balance between time spent on actual job duties versus quality time spent outside of work with family and friends. Employers should strive to ensure that their employees have adequate breaks throughout their day so they are not constantly under stress or feeling overwhelmed while still managing all their job responsibilities in a timely manner. Employees should also learn how manage their own stress levels by taking regular breaks away from the workplace as well as setting boundaries where they will not stay past a certain hour no matter what tasks need completing before leaving for the day.
