What is Working Class Families?
Working class families face a number of challenges that can be detrimental to their quality of life and overall economic stability. Among these challenges are low wages, inadequate job security, limited access to educational resources, and high costs of living. As a result, many working class families struggle to make ends meet, with parents often having to work multiple jobs in order to provide for their family’s basic needs. The lack of job security experienced by many working class families is particularly concerning as it can lead to periods of unemployment which can cause serious financial hardship. Furthermore, when jobs are available they often pay very low wages which make it difficult for individuals in the family unit to afford necessities such as food and clothing. This issue is further compounded by the high cost of living in some areas which makes it even more difficult for those on lower incomes to survive on their current wages. Additionally, while education has been touted as an effective way out of poverty, this is not necessarily true for working class families who may not have access or be able to afford post-secondary institutions or other educational opportunities. This results in fewer career options for those from working class backgrounds and fewer chances for them to move up the socio-economic ladder. In order for this cycle of poverty faced by many working-class families to be broken there needs to be significant changes made at both the individual and governmental levels that will help empower these individuals with better opportunities and resources that will allow them greater financial security and stability. Governments should consider policies such as increasing minimum wage rates across all sectors as well as providing free or affordable childcare services so that parents from working-class backgrounds have more time and energy available for pursuing higher education or better paying jobs if needed.
