What is Urinary Tract Infection?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of any part of the urinary system, including the bladder, ureters, urethra, and kidneys. It is one of the most common bacterial infections in humans and is usually caused by bacteria from the lower intestine entering the urinary tract. Symptoms vary depending on which part of the urinary tract is infected but may include frequent urination accompanied by a burning sensation or pain with urination, increased urgency to urinate, cloudy urine that may have a strong odor or contain blood, flank pain just below the ribs on either side of your back, fever and chills. UTIs can be classified into two types: uncomplicated and complicated UTIs. Uncomplicated UTIs are typically seen in healthy individuals who do not have any other underlying medical conditions; these infections are usually easy to treat with antibiotics. Complicated UTIs occur more often in individuals with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus or kidney stones; these infections are more difficult to treat and may require additional testing or treatments such as hospitalization for intravenous antibiotics. Prevention measures for UTI include drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day to flush out bacteria from your urinary system; emptying your bladder completely when you go to use it; wiping front-to-back after using the restroom; avoiding tight-fitting clothing around your genital area; urinating before and immediately after sexual intercourse; practicing good hygiene by showering daily and cleaning your genital area regularly; drinking cranberry juice or taking cranberry supplements to reduce bacterial growth in your bladder; avoiding douches as they can irritate your bladder lining further. When it comes to treatment options for UTI’s, antibiotics are typically prescribed depending on which type of bacteria is responsible for causing it. The type of antibiotic used will depend on how severe the infection is as well as what type of bacteria it is caused by.
