What is Texting And Driving?
Texting and driving is an extremely dangerous behavior that has become a major safety concern for people of all ages. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, each year more than 3,000 people are killed due to distracted driving. Texting while driving is one of the most common forms of distracted driving, with drivers using their cell phones to read and write text messages while behind the wheel. This type of behavior puts everyone on the road in danger and increases the risk of motor vehicle accidents. Drivers who text while behind the wheel typically take their eyes off the road for an average of five seconds or more at a time. In that five seconds, a car going 55 mph can travel more than 100 yards without being seen by its driver. This means that drivers are unable to react quickly enough if something unexpected occurs on the road aheadpotentially leading to serious consequences for themselves or others on the road. Texting and driving also increases reaction time when it comes to braking; this results in longer stopping distances should an emergency arise. In order to combat this problem, many states have implemented laws prohibiting texting while driving or have put restrictions on cell phone use for younger drivers who are just learning how to drive. Additionally, parents can set rules about phone use in their vehicles with their teenage children; these rules should emphasize that any use beyond navigation purposes is not allowed while operating a motor vehicle. Additionally, public awareness campaigns can help educate individuals about just how dangerous texting and driving really is so they make better decisions when behind the wheel. Overall, texting and driving is an extremely dangerous activity that endangers everyone on the roadsand it’s essential that we all do our part to prevent it from occurring in our day-to-day lives. Through setting rules at home as well as educating ourselves about distracted driving laws in our state, we can help create safer roads for everyone involved.
