What is Star Spangled Banner?
The Star-Spangled Banner is a patriotic anthem of the United States of America, written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key. It is recognized around the world as an important part of American culture and tradition. The song was born out of a momentous event in American history: the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812.On September 13th and 14th, 1814, British forces began bombarding Fort McHenry off the coast of Baltimore. As they attacked, Francis Scott Key watched from a boat several miles away. When dawn broke and he could see that the fort’s red, white and blue flag had not been lowereddespite heavy bombardmentKey was moved to write down his thoughts on paper. His poem eventually became known as The Star-Spangled Banner. The lyrics to The Star-Spangled Banner serve as an ode to both freedom and perseverance in times of struggle. The first stanza celebrates what was seen at dawn: O say can you see by the dawn’s early light / What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? This refers to how Key proudly observed that after hours under bombardment from hundreds of artillery shells, Fort McHenry’s flag still flew above its wallsa symbol that their struggle for independence would continue on despite adversity. The legacy behind The Star-Spangled Banner is one that has lasted through generations it stands today as an important reminder that freedom is not taken for granted but must be fought for every day.
