What is Sitting Bull And Crazy Horse?
Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse are two of the most renowned figures from the Lakota Sioux tribe, who were prominent leaders in the resistance to American expansion during the 19th century. Their leadership and courage in battle have become legendary and their legacies continue to be celebrated today.Sitting Bull was born around 1831 in what is now South Dakota. He was a spiritual leader of his people and became a powerful chief of the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux tribe. He is best known for leading his people during their successful resistance against General Custer at Little Bighorn in 1876, a battle which led to Sitting Bull’s fame as one of Native American’s greatest warriors. Despite this success, Sitting Bull refused to participate in any further fighting against Americans and instead sought peace between Native Americans and whites. He eventually surrendered voluntarily to U. S forces in 1881 but would remain under government supervision until his death in 1890 while continuing to advocate for his people’s rights and dignity. Crazy Horse was also born around 1830s, near present-day Rapid City, South Dakota into an Oglala Lakota family. He rose up quickly among his peers due to his impressive physical stamina as well as wisdom beyond his years which earned him the name Crazy Horse at an early age. His military prowess soon made him one of Sitting Bull’s most trusted lieutenants during battles with U. S forces such as Little Bighorn where he famously led a daring cavalry charge that routed Custer’s men from the battlefield.
