However, some cultures challenge these rigid rules by recognizing more than two genders or even encouraging an individual’s self-expression regardless of their assigned sex at birth. Gender norms can also influence how people express themselves sexually; historically it was acceptable only for heterosexual couples engage in sexual activity while same-sex relationships were viewed with stigma or even criminalized altogether. Today there is growing acceptance of LGBTQIA+ identities which seek to recognize all forms of gender identity and expression without prejudice or discrimination against those who do not fit into traditional societal expectations around sex/gender roles. In conclusion, understanding the difference between sex and gender helps us appreciate our own unique identities as well as those of others who identify differently from us something that is becoming increasingly necessary in today’s diverse world where everyone should feel accepted regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
