What is Posttraumatic Stress Disorder?
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that can occur after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event such as physical or sexual assault, natural disasters, warfare and accidents. It can affect anyone at any age and has been known to disrupt the ability of individuals to live healthy and productive lives. Symptoms include flashbacks of the traumatic event, nightmares, avoidance of reminders of the event, difficulty sleeping, detachment from loved ones and feelings of guilt or shame. The causes and triggers for PTSD are not entirely known but it is thought that genetics may play a role in who is vulnerable to develop it. Additionally, certain factors such as pre-existing mental health conditions, lack of social support following the trauma and exposure to long-term stress may increase one’s likelihood for developing PTSD. Treatment approaches for PTSD vary depending on the individual needs of each patient but generally includes talk therapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which helps individuals identify negative thoughts associated with the trauma and replace these with positive coping strategies; Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), which uses rapid eye movements while recalling memories associated with trauma; medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs); exposure therapy where patients confront their fears by gradually exposing themselves to reminders related to their trauma; relaxation techniques; supportive counselling; peer support groups; art/music/dance therapies; yoga/meditation etc. It is important for those suffering from PTSD to seek professional help in order to manage symptoms and lead healthier lives. Early intervention can help prevent further distress in those affected by this condition so it’s important for family members or carers who notice signs of PTSD in someone they know act quickly if they are concerned about them. With proper treatment people suffering from this condition can learn how to cope with their emotions better in order remain connected with friends & family while engaging meaningfully in everyday activities again.
