What is Long Term Consequences?
of Childhood ObesityChildhood obesity is a serious and growing health concern in the United States. The long-term consequences of childhood obesity can extend well into adulthood, leading to physical and mental health issues that can last for years. The physical effects of childhood obesity are numerous and severe. Obese children are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders (such as osteoarthritis), sleep apnea, asthma, liver damage and certain types of cancer due to increased fatty tissue in the body. These conditions can lead to a lifetime of pain and disability if left untreated or unmanaged properly. Additionally, obese children tend to have lower physical activity levels which contribute to an overall decrease in fitness level and increase their risk for future disease development. Mental health issues associated with childhood obesity can be just as debilitating as the physical ones. Children who are obese face social stigma from peers which can lead to low self-esteem and depression; they may also feel isolated due to difficulty engaging in activities that involve physical exertion or fear being judged by others because of their size. This poor mental state increases the likelihood of developing additional psychological problems such as anxiety or eating disorders later on in life. Finally, financial costs associated with treating obesity related diseases throughout adulthood can be staggering with medical bills often reaching into the thousands each year depending on severity levels or number of chronic illnesses present within an individual patient’s case history. It is important for parents to understand these potential long term consequences so they may take steps towards preventing them from occurring by teaching healthy lifestyle habits early on in their child’s life such as balanced nutrition choices and regular exercise routines tailored towards age appropriateness standards set forth by healthcare professionals specializing in this field today.
