What is Least Restrictive Environment?
Least restrictive environment (LRE) is a term used in the United States of America to describe an educational setting which provides maximum access to educational and non-academic services for students with disabilities. It is based on the principle that all students, regardless of their disability, should have access to a quality education in an environment that maximizes their potential for learning and development. The LRE concept was introduced as part of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1975, and has been incorporated into special education legislation since then.The goal of providing an LRE is to ensure that all students receive instruction appropriate to their individual needs while being offered opportunities which will enable them to achieve success within a general education setting. To this end, educators must consider several key factors when determining which LRE best meets a student’s needs. These include the student’s age, disability category, academic levels and behavior management strategies needed for success. In addition, educators must consider how much time would be required for each type of instruction or service provided in order to meet the student’s individualized goals and objectives. When establishing an appropriate LRE for a given student, educators must also consider if any modifications or accommodations are needed such as those related to instructional materials or technology; they may also need to provide additional support services such as physical therapy or counseling services if necessary. Additionally, any changes made should be carefully monitored over time in order to ensure they are meeting the student’s needs appropriately as his/her abilities change over time. In sum, Least Restrictive Environment is an important concept within special education legislation because it ensures that all students have access to quality educational opportunities regardless of their disability status or individualized needs. Educators must take into account numerous factors when choosing which LRE option best meets each child’s needs in order maximize his/her potential for learning and development within a general education setting.
