What is Consumer Product Safety Commission?
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is a federal agency in the United States that is responsible for protecting the public from risks posed by consumer products. This includes, but is not limited to, toys, appliances, furniture, tools and other items sold in stores or online. The CPSC also works to reduce hazards associated with toxic substances and hazardous materials found in many products. The CPSC was established in 1972 by Congress under the Consumer Product Safety Act. It is an independent agency overseen by a five-member commission appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate. The commission establishes safety standards for consumer products and sets limits on acceptable levels of hazardous chemicals or materials found in those products. In addition, it investigates complaints about product defects or dangers associated with their use and can take enforcement action against manufacturers who violate safety standards or otherwise put consumers at risk. The CPSC works closely with state agencies as well as industry groups to ensure consumer safety through mandatory standards and voluntary guidelines developed based on research conducted by its staff scientists. The agency also educates consumers about potential hazards through its website as well as pamphlets and other literature distributed at retail locations across the country. Finally, it provides support for recalls of unsafe products when necessary to protect consumers from harm caused by dangerous items still on store shelves or being used in homes nationwide. Overall, the mission of the Consumer Product Safety Commission is to protect people from injuries or death due to defective or dangerous consumer products while at the same time promoting product innovation and economic growth within industry sectors regulated under its purview.
