What is Comparison And Contrast?

The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee tells the story of a small southern town in 1930’s Alabama and the lives of two children as they learn lessons about life and morality. The two main characters are Scout Finch, a young girl who is growing up in the town, and her brother Jem. Both characters face similar experiences throughout the story, but they react to them differently. This essay will compare and contrast Scout and Jem’s traits, attitudes, and beliefs.Scout is portrayed as an intelligent yet naive child who is constantly questioning why people act or think the way they do. She is also brave, often standing up for what she believes in even when faced with danger or disapproval from her peers. Her boldness sometimes gets her into trouble but she always learns from her mistakes. She has strong beliefs about justice and fairness which leads her to understand why Atticus defends Tom Robinson even when everyone else in Maycomb is against him. Jem on the other hand starts out as an immature boy who has difficulty understanding his father’s moral code until he reaches maturity at the end of the novel. He initially assumes that everyone thinks like him until he begins to understand why Atticus defends Tom Robinson despite community pressure not to do so. He grows more mature during his relationship with Boo Radley, learning empathy towards others and being kinder towards those judged unfairly by society such as Boo Radley or Tom Robinson himself.
