What is Communication Apprehension?
Communication apprehension is a feeling of discomfort that arises when one must communicate or interact with others in a social setting. It is often associated with shyness, lack of confidence, and an overall fear of speaking in public or interacting with other people. Communication apprehension can have a negative impact on one’s work life, social life, and even personal relationships. The causes of communication apprehension vary greatly from person to person. Some may experience it due to lack of confidence in their speaking ability or their knowledge on the subject matter being discussed. Others may have had traumatic experiences that make them afraid to speak up and be heard; for example, someone who was constantly put down by authority figures as a child may feel too intimidated to speak in public later in life. Whatever the cause, communication apprehension can be an obstacle to success both professionally and personally if left unchecked. There are various ways to overcome communication apprehension. The first step is understanding why one feels apprehensive about speaking or interacting with others; identifying the source will make it easier to reduce feelings of anxiety related to communicating with others. Additionally, practicing positive affirmations can help build self-confidence and reduce stress levels before speaking publicly or starting conversations with unfamiliar people. Other strategies include joining speech clubs like Toastmasters International which provide support systems for those looking to improve their public speaking skills, taking deep breaths prior to conversations, and using calming mantras such as I am capable before engaging in dialogue with others. Finally, it’s important for those who struggle with communication apprehension not forget that everyone feels anxious from time-to-time; instead of getting caught up in negative thoughts about oneself or worrying about what others think about them it can be helpful simply focus on listening attentively during conversations and staying present without letting the mind wander into anxious projections about the future. With practice anyone can learn how better manage the fear associated with communicating publicly or interacting socially so they no longer need let feelings of insecurity stand between them and success.
