What is Arithmetic?
Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics that deals with the study of numbers, their properties and operations. Arithmetic is one of the oldest branches of mathematics, having roots in ancient Egypt and Babylon. It has since been developed into one of the most essential tools used in everyday life.Arithmetic involves the use of various operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and exponents to solve problems involving numbers. Addition is when two or more numbers are added together to produce a sum. Subtraction is when one number is taken away from another to produce a difference. Multiplication involves multiplying two or more numbers together to produce a product. Division involves dividing one number by another to find out how many times it will fit into the original number. Exponents involve raising a number by an exponent power – for example 3^2 is 3 times itself 2 times (3 x 3).The use of arithmetic can be seen everywhere in our lives from calculating bills at grocery stores and restaurants to balancing our checkbooks and figuring out taxes due on an income tax form. Arithmetic also enables us compute complex equations used in science and engineering fields such as physics or chemistry where calculations are needed on a daily basis for research purposes or experiments being conducted in laboratories around the world.
