What is AP World History: Modern?
AP World History: Modern is a course designed to introduce students to the major global developments of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It covers the political, economic, social, technological, and cultural changes that have shaped today’s world. Through a variety of topics such as colonialism and imperialism, industrialization and globalization, nationalism and revolution, world wars and Cold War conflicts, this course emphasizes connections between past events in order to gain an understanding of contemporary issues.The primary focus of AP World History: Modern is on developing critical thinking skills through historical analysis. Students must be able to analyze evidence from various sources in order to draw connections between different events or eras in history. To ensure students are equipped with these skills they will study multiple documents including maps, images, statistics as well as primary source material such as letters written by famous figures throughout history. By examining how individuals interacted with each other during certain time periods or why particular decisions were made by governments or organizations throughout history helps them gain a better appreciation for how our current society has been shaped over time. In addition to analyzing primary sources in depth students are required to write essays which require them develop their own arguments based on research completed throughout their studies so far. The goal being that at the end of this class they should be able to present their own interpretations about specific conflicts within modern history based on facts derived from essential readings assigned for the coursework. Overall AP World History: Modern provides an engaging way for high schoolers interested in learning more about recent global trends while also equipping them with important analytical skills needed for any subject matter involving historical examinations down the line – whether it be for college level classes or even personal interests outside school related activities.
