What is AP United States History?

AP United States History, or APUSH as it is commonly known, is a course offered in American high schools that allows students to gain an appreciation for the history of their nation. It covers events from pre-contact Native Americans to the present day and encompasses a wide range of topics such as politics, economics, culture, social movements and foreign relations. Through this course, students are able to develop an understanding of the complexities of US history and its relevance within our modern world. The most important aspect of this class is learning about how political ideas have evolved over time and how they impact current policy decisions. Students learn about major Supreme Court cases that define civil liberties in America today. They also explore pivotal moments in US history like the Industrial Revolution or World War I which allowed for technological advancements that shaped society today. Additionally, they examine economic policies like tariffs or laissez-faire capitalism that helped shape America’s economy into what it is today. Social movements are another key topic discussed throughout APUSH classes. Examples include civil rights campaigns like the Montgomery Bus Boycott or women’s suffrage efforts by Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton which challenged traditional gender roles set forth by society during those times.
