What is American National Standards Institute?
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a non-profit, private organization that works to promote the development and use of voluntary standards in the United States. Founded in 1918, ANSI is an umbrella organization that brings together organizations from across the business and industry sectors, government agencies, and consumer groups to develop standards that help ensure safety, health, quality and performance. ANSI accredits organizations that certify products or services according to specific standards. This certification allows for open access to information about product or service performance which helps consumers make smarter purchasing decisions. Additionally, ANSI accredited standards may be used as a basis for legal requirements by local governments or other third-party organizations. Through its publications program, ANSI also publishes thousands of documents related to national and international standards such as safety codes for building materials; communication protocols; software engineering guidelines; manufacturing processes; quality assurance methods; environmental regulations; health care practices; energy efficiency protocols; laboratory accreditation requirements; food labeling procedures; public transportation regulations and more. The organization’s global outreach program seeks to foster international cooperation on standardization efforts through alliances with foreign countries’ standardization bodies such as the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). Additionally, ANSI is a founding member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which works with national bodies around the world on setting voluntary global technical standards. Overall, ANSI serves an important role in promoting safe products through their standardization program while helping businesses create better products that are more cost-effective and efficient by providing them with resources such as guidelines on best practice techniques. Finally, their publications help inform consumers about product performance so they can make informed purchasing decisions.
