What is Alcohol And Drug Use?

Alcohol and drug use have become increasingly prevalent in today’s society. In many countries, the age of legal consent to consume alcohol is 18 or 19 and the same applies to purchasing or using drugs. Despite laws regarding their consumption, there are still numerous individuals who choose to misuse these substances. The use of alcohol and drugs can have serious repercussions on a person’s health, safety and overall wellbeing.The immediate effects of alcohol and drug use can range from impaired judgement to euphoria. Both substances act as depressants on the central nervous system which can lead to a decreased reaction time, slurred speech, nausea or vomiting and even death if taken in large enough doses. Long-term consequences such as addiction, organ damage, cognitive impairment and social problems may result from continued usage even at low levels. These issues often have an impact on not only those who consume but also their families, friends and society as a whole in terms of increased healthcare costs for treatment programs and law enforcement resources used in battling drug-related crimes. There are various strategies employed by governments around the world in order to combat both alcohol abuse and illicit drug use including taxation policies meant to raise prices for alcoholic beverages (making them less affordable), restrictions placed upon public drinking (such as designated areas where it is permitted) or educational campaigns encouraging safe drinking habits (eg: responsible service initiatives). Similarly with illegal drugs there has been an increase focus on rehabilitation centers providing support for addicts rather than prison sentences (which had previously been seen as the standard approach). Ultimately one must remember that while there are risks associated with any form of substance abuse it is ultimately up to each individual’s discretion whether they choose to partake or not no matter what their peers may encourage them towards doing so. As such it is important that people remain informed about both positive & negative aspects associated with these activities so that they can make informed decisions when confronted with opportunities involving either alcohol or drugs knowing full well what potential consequences may arise from their actions.
