Symbolism in the Movie Two Men and a Wardrobe Essay Example
In this 20-minute film by Roman Polanski, he features the rather odd team-up of two men, who emerged from the sea with a huge luggage, a wardrobe which they prefer to carry off top town.
This short silent film showed the different reactions of people towards the two men carrying a wardrobe. Some of these reactions had lead to violent encounters, where people treat them indifferently because of the wardrobe that they are carrying with them. Some of these reactions include the time when they were barred from riding a public vehicle, a streetcar, just because of what they have with them. They were also not able to enter various establishments and were attacked by a group of delinquent kids, and had even witnessed a murder (Movies.com).Looking closely at the symbolism of
...the film Two Men and a Wardrobe, the film takes on the concept of being unique, and how people would tend to react to it.
The wardrobe serves as the thing that makes the two men different from other people. They are always carrying it, wherever they go and whatever they do. Because of that, some people find it odd, some find it amusing, and there are some who are violent towards that oddity. The difference in the reactions of people would imply that not all people are open to odd things, and some would even choose not to get involved or even get close to it, like the people who refuse the two men, in the streetcar or several establishments. The film is actually a silent comedy, mixed with the elements of slapstick and humor.
But looking at its serious side, it take
on the perceptions of different people about the same thing, and how people react differently. The two men were not doing anything to actually cause commotion or attract others attention, except for the fact that they are carrying a big luggage of a wardrobe. The people would either run away when they see the two men with the wardrobe or chase them off because of what they are carrying. They are treated indifferently without them knowing why.
But applying it with the concept of culture and society, it could be a reflection of how people usually treat foreigners and others who doesn’t look familiar or common. There are different reactions as to whether they are treated differently or be accepted by the society. The luggage is actually the symbol of difference, maybe of physical uniqueness or cultural difference. If you remove the luggage – the wardrobe they are carrying, it would just leave another normal person, just like any of the townspeople. This is an implication of the human being’s curiosity, their constant fear of the things which are unfamiliar to them, where it could drive them towards fear or violence to other people. The townspeople reacted by instinct towards the two men carrying the wardrobe.
They drove them away violently, chasing them whenever and wherever they see them. But they didn’t much think that they haven’t done their part on actually knowing what it is about the wardrobe, why the two men were always carrying it with them. Instead they became impulsive and chose to have it their way.Looking at the wardrobe as a symbol, it could be a representation of a unique culture, or
a rather odd belief, different from those surrounding the two men.
What the townspeople should have done was to understand it clearly first, and not let their emotions drive them to do violent things toward the two men, as if they were carrying an infectious disease or something. All they have to do was to ask what was with the wardrobe, and they would have saved the time chasing away the two men and the wardrobe that they are carrying with them.
