Over time it seems that Psychopathy among children and adolescences has increased at alarming rates.
A current study investigated 140 adolescents, a mix of both boys and girls. They were searching for potential protective mechanisms of intelligence and if they had the motivation to change. The researchers were hoping to identify who was a protentional risk for future offenders. One of the main focuses was on risk factors which could establish a direct correlation between psychopathy and delinquency in children and adolescences. Some important risk factors are the person’s personality or traits they inherited which could also contribute to a negative outcome.
Some examples of these personalities or traits are antisocial behavior, spousal abuse, aggression, drug uses, poor academics, and occupational performance. These factors should be carefully reviewed to fig
...ure out what factors may affect people in the future which would involve the search for protective factors which could modify the people who are at risk. The research also was trying to determine if a person’s IQ had any significant impact on them to become a psychopath or was a protective factor which would give them the motivation to change. Studies showed that stress did not affect intelligent children’s ability to function. IQ’s act as a protective in many studies but did not proves so in the case of a child or adolescent psychopathy. Only one study examined the correlation between psychopathy and verbal IQ and the predictors of violence, delinquency for those who were verbal intelligent (Salekin, Schrum Dillard, Lee, & Kubak , 2010).
A major cognitive aspect that can not be forgotten and needs to be factored in is their motivation, future goals and how the
can make a difference in their community. These simple things can mean a lot when you are factoring if the person has the desire and will which will motivate them to change. When this study was conducted it focused on child psychopathy and their intelligence and motivation to change as their two protective factors. The individuals in the study were all detained in a detention center.
The researched was done and the offenders to determine how a person’s IQ would be positively related or their psychopathy and would the two protective factors contribute to reoffending, To obtain the data needed to do this research many tests were done. To test Psychopathy was measured by a CPS scale was a self-reporting tool made of 50 question. IQ was also tested with a KBIT test. To measure Motivation to change RSTI scale was used.
Personality was also evaluated by using the IASR-B5 self- reporting system. The testing lasted 3 hours for each person. All the researcher was trained in proper procedures. The results indicated that psychopathy and the motivation to change are closely related to all offenders. It also showed that a person’s personality is significantly impacted by factors such as intelligence, motivation, and environment.
These studies are the key to understanding the development of healthy children. It was hard to determine the link between psychopathy and IQ’s since they result varied so much. The outcome between Psychopathy and motivation to change were very helpful because if they rated high on the motivation to change allows for a plan for an intervention. When a person believes they can change there is a great possibility they will. All we can do
is hope that these studies are used to stop children and adolescent from committing serious crimes of violence since they are on the rise.
We need to work together to not only keep our children safe, but all the children involved safe.
