Stress is a nervous tension that no one wants to experience. However, stressful experiences are part of our lives and as much as we try to avoid stress, it is important to learn from stressful experiences and be ready to overcome current ones. My most nerve racking experience occurred in my mother’s medical office where I was working as a phlebotomist. It was on Friday evening early this year and as usual I was arranging my mother’s office before going home after work. My mother had left earlier on to another hospital where she used to work up to 10.pm before going home. Suddenly, a mother dashed in carrying her five years old boy. The boy had stepped on broken water glasses making his leg to swell up to five times its usual size. Worst of all, there was piece of broken glass in his leg that could not be removed without performing a minor surgery. I tried to explain to her that that was not my profession but she could not understand. Having no alternative, I inject the boy with local ane

sthesia and made few cuts to remove glass piece beneath his skin.

The actual drama started when I was done and I noticed that the boy was bleeding accessibly and her mother was shouting that I had killed her son. I called my mother but I could not reach her. With my heart beating heavily I tried to calm the boy’s mother but it was all in vain. I used all the bandages in the office but the bleeding could not stop. Two hours later my mother arrived to pick me since it was raining. After attending to the boy, my mother declared that he was hemophiliac and he required special medication to stop bleeding. We took the boy to the neighboring hospital and I had to watch him over the weekend to ensure he was responding well. I had to pay all the hospital bills for one week since the boy’s mother said it was my entire fault and if I failed to pay she could involve the authorities. Eventually the boy got well and I made a resolution never to be overcome by emotions while attending patients.
