Ski Jumping – The Major International Events Essay Example
Various ski jumping events are held around the world, including the prestigious FIS Ski Jumping World Cup organized annually by the International Ski Federation.
In the first season of 1979-80, the world cup was introduced and comprised of approximately 25 to 30 competitions per season. Usually, there are two competitions held every weekend on a single hill. Each competition contains three rounds which include a qualifying round as well as first and second rounds.
The Winter Olympics is a significant worldwide ski jumping competition that has featured ski jumping in every program of the event. The competitions from 1924 to 1956 had various hill lengths, but historians later determined that the hills should be standardized to 70 meters. These large hills are now considered as meeting the criteria.
In 1960, the ski ju
...mp hill was standardized to a length of 80 meters. A second ski jump was added in 1964, with the normal hill at 70 meters and the large hill at 80 meters. The large hill's length was increased from 80 meters to 90 meters in 1968. The team event of the large hill type was added in 1988. Starting in 1992, K-point distances were used to differentiate between the various ski jumping competitions.
Following a change in specification, the run length of hills was not considered, meaning the observed length prior to ski jump launch was disregarded. The large hill had a length of 120 meters while the small hill was 90 meters. This same specification and trend has been consistently followed since then. During the 2006 Winter Olympics, the normal and large hills were designated as HS106 (K95) and HS140 (K125), respectively. Only male ski jumpers
participate in these competitions.
Women's ski jumping has consistently been excluded from the International Olympic event since 2006, but the FIS proposed its inclusion in the competition to the International Olympic Committee that same year. Unfortunately, despite this effort, the proposal was rejected by the committee.
Despite the fact that the FIS Nordic Ski World Championships and other international ski jumping competitions have included women's ski jumping events, it remained excluded from the Winter Olympics.
