Should Homosexuals Be Allowed to Marry? Nataria Jackman PHI 103 Instructor Renee Levant January 16, 2012 Should Homosexuals Be Allowed to Marry? Marriage is a very sacred arrangement. It is a lifetime commitment said to be only between man and woman. These two people should love or be in love with each other. Over the years homosexuality has come to the forefront. The question of should homosexuals be allowed to marry each other has had the world in an uproar. Homosexuals, indeed should be able to marry each other with the same benefits as man and woman.
I chose to write about gay marriage because it is very close and dear to me. I am a proud lesbian! I am not one of those lesbians that hate men, or anything of t
...he sort. In fact, I used to be married to a guy. Things just didn’t work out with him. Needless to say, I gave love another try. This go around it just happen to be with another woman. Now, I get treated differently by the world, even my family. I am a true believer in a person not being able to help who they fall in love with. Should I be treated differently because this person happens to be female?
If so, then why? I should be treated as I was treated before my current relationship. I am the same person that my state let marry this man. Why can I not marry this woman? I love her and we both wish to be married, but there are so many states in the United States that do not allow this union. The states that do allo
the civil union to take place might as well not. All of the perks and privileges that come along with matrimony, between male and female, are not given to the same sex couples that they allowed to get married. This does not make any sense to me.
Why would you allow some to get married and treat them differently when it comes to the rules of the situation at hand? If you allow homosexuals to join hands in a civil union then they should get the same rights. Otherwise, why bother (Jackman, 2011). According to www. christiangays. com, there are many countries that allow the union to take place, and there are countries that do not allow the civil union to take place but recognize the gay marriage. For instance, the countries that recognize the marriage of gays are Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Spain, South Africa, and Argentina.
The countries that actually allow the couple to get married are Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Mexico Switzerland, and United Kingdom. Let it be known that all countries that recognize gay marriage, do not allow the ceremony to take place in their countries. The countries that actually do both (recognize and allow the ceremony) are Norway, Sweden, Portugal, and Iceland (2011). Like the different countries that allow and recognize gay marriage, there are some states in the United States the does the same.
New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and the District of Columbia are the states that recognize the marriage of the same sex. The states that allow the ceremony to take place are New Jersey, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Nevada, and Wisconsin. There are also
some states that allow gay marriages with provisions. Amongst these are Hawaii, California, New York, and District of Columbia. Provision in this case means ‘under the circumstances of’. The married gay couples do not get the benefits of a header asexual marriage.
This basically says that we will let you call yourselves a married couple, but you are not treated as such when it comes down to the business part of things (www. christiangays . com, 2011). New York only recognizes the marriages that take place outside of its state. In my state (Texas), gay marriage is not allowed neither is it recognized. However, I think that we may be getting a few steps closer to breaking some grounds on that subject. A judge stated that she thought that Texas ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional. I’ll explain. A couple was married in another state and had been married for about three years.
They, since being married, had established residency here in Texas. Well, they decided to get a divorce. The state granted the couple a divorce. She called the ban on gay marriage unconstitutional because, if you do not allow nor do you recognize same sex marriage, how could you grant a same sex couple a divorce (Marrow & Goldberg, 2009). I agree with this judge completely. How is this not a double standard? So it is safe to say that for Texas, it is okay to divorce whomever, whether it is male and female, male and male, or female and female, but they can not get married here nless they are opposite sex. How can you divorce someone that you do not recognize as being
married. I feel like this couple should have been made to file for a divorce in a state that recognizes gay marriage. Otherwise, you should allow gay couples to get married as they wish. Who are we hurting? Each person is held accountable for his/her own actions, so let us be responsible and deal with our relationship troubles. It is a relationship. It is not any different from an opposite sex marriage or relationship. We have to deal with our sins, let us.
The Huffington Post reports that Attorney General Eric Holder said President Barack Obama has concluded that the administration cannot defend the federal law that defines marriage as only between a man and a woman. He noted that the congressional debate during passage of the Defense of Marriage Act “contains numerous expressions reflecting moral disapproval of gays and lesbians and their intimate and family relationships precisely the kind of stereotype-based thinking and animus the (Constitution’s) Equal Protection Clause is designed to guard against” (2011).
The Justice Department had defended the act in court until now. Holder also noted that the Supreme Court has ruled that laws criminalizing homosexual conduct are unconstitutional and that Congress has repealed the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. It is said that President Barack Obama is still grappling with his personal view of gay marriage but has always personally opposed the Defense of Marriage Act as “unnecessary and unfair” (2011). Many people in the world today as we know it, feel this way in particular, but there are not enough people standing up for gay rights.
There are more and more people joining the fight to protect gays and for gays
to have the same rights as a header asexual relationship or marriage. There are a lot of header asexual people in this world, but the number of gay people are rising by the hour. We make up our own population and communities now-a-days. It is said that gay women have it easier than gay men. That might be a fact of life. The points that are to made are all of the gay people have it hard and it shouldn’t be that way at all. I think that the world is afraid that gay marriage will take over the world.
That could not be less true. All we ask is that we get the same rights to and benefits of marriage as a header asexual couple. Is it really physically or mentally hurting anyone for a woman to marry a woman, or for a man to marry another man? Absolutely not! So again, why can gays not have their unions held where ever they would like to have it held, and be acknowledged as married. Mosser insist that there is no right or wrong, but that such evaluative terms must be understood relative to a culture, a society, or even an individual (2010). There it is in words according to Mosser.
What you think is wrong and ungodly; another may think that it is just as right as anything else. A marriage is sacred and personable. Anyone joined in this type of union, should all have equal rights. A gay couple’s marriage (if allowed), should be considered as of equal values as a header asexual marriage (Jackman, 2011). Again, I will say we are all human beings.
Where does it say because of our sexuality that we should be treat differently? I would like to know the answer to this if anyone has it, or is the world simply based on opinion? In today's society people want there way to be the right way.
This could go for gays too. Who is to say who is right. For example, a man does not approve of a man and man marriage. This same man would not give it a second thought if he was asked to join two women in bed. His excuse, two men being together is nasty and wrong, but two women together is his fantasy. Is that hypocritical or what? I did a survey on the streets to see if this was how straight men think. The results showed that nine out of ten felt this way. There are men and women in society that will say it doesn’t matter to them as long as a gay woman or man does not approach them.
This is the way that everyone should be. That would be too right! In the upcoming elections, there is supposed to be a debate on gay marriage. I am not sure if this will be a sincere debate, or just a host to gain more votes. President Obama might just be trying to win the votes of the gay community. It would be very sad if he gets those votes and actually do nothing about the subject at hand. Gay men and lesbians should have the same rights as any other human beings. The reason I say this is because like I said before, we are our own
community. It is growing everyday no atter what people against us might say. I would just like to see someone in politics to just do as they say at least one time before I die. This would be a major accomplishment. Needless to say, I am talking about gay marriage. All I want is to be able to marry the person that I love with no hassles. When it comes to relationships, no one should have anything to say about one another. No one is perfect. Everyone has their own problems. Everyone tries to deal with their own problems. Therefore, everyone should mind their own business and stay out of our neighbor's business.
The world would be a much better place. How dare you tell me who I need to be with! The day you start to let someone else dictate who you are supposed to be with will be a very miserable day indeed. I would rather be with my girlfriend and happy, rather than with someone I am with just because society says that it is right. So again, marriage is a very sacred and lawful arrangement held between two people that make lifetime commitments to love, honor, obey, and cherish each other through sickness and in health. This is not saying that it has to be man and woman.
Homosexuals have just as much rights to marry and be together as anyone else. In Logic: An Introduction, Mosser talks about inductive and deductive arguments. He states more than once that most arguments between human beings are made up of both (2011). He is definitely right! I'm not sure about most cases, but this argument
is a mixture of both. I have given you some facts, some opinions that support my beliefs and conclusion. So now I will introduce myself to the world. Hi, my name is Nataria Kendrette Young Jackman, and I am a proud lesbian!
