In his speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC in 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. articulated his vision for equality in America. He emphasized the belief that "we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." King imagined a future where even states like Mississippi, which had experienced injustice and oppression, could change into places of freedom and justice. His dream included a country without discrimination, where every American - regardless of their ancestry as descendants of slaves or slave owners - could unite as equals (Kuypers 2009).
In the 1960s, the American dream underwent modifications while upholding its core values. As per my mother's interview, she highlights equality as the pivotal aspect of her American dream vision: a society where absolute
...equality reigns. This encompasses equal wages for women, equitable employment prospects, and placing family above materialism.
From my perspective, the American dream has remained consistent since the 1960s. I envision a country where everyone can achieve economic prosperity, echoing Martin Luther King Jr.'s concerns about poverty among black Americans in a nation rich in resources. Additionally, I imagine a community that upholds freedom of expression and fosters tolerance, while also working towards enhanced social unity (Kuypers 2009).
Despite the changing circumstances and emerging issues such as family values versus materialism and gender equality, the core values of equality, togetherness, and justice remain unchanged in both the American dream of the 1960s and that of today.
