‘how long will it take to learn a second language?’. The answer mainly depends on work ethic, time, environment, and attitude. The U.S State Department has broken down the most popular and influential world languages into different categories for English speakers to learn.

Their easiest category is composed of most of the romance languages, ending with their own “superhard” category consisting of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cantonese, and Arabic. Despite their ranking, the time frame of learning depends heavily on the student. There are certain weaknesses and strengths that some students have in languages that others do not. Spanish is ranked in the easiest section which is a weaker point for me, while learning Chinese and other languages in the superhard section come more naturally to my mind, and in the medium section German which was also easier for my brain to pick up and compound it’s elements when learning in ninth grade. So we all differ greatly.

Their estimated time for learning second languages categorized from easiest to superhard starts from 23 weeks and 20 hours a week ranging all the way up to 88 weeks and 2,200 hours of total study! However, these times can always differ depending how students work on studying a second languages themselves in the condition they are in. While the fact that varying languages have different degrees of difficulty, living in the first language culture can only enhance the language learning opportunity. There are many factors in place which can motivate immersion students to have certain mindsets and goals.

Some of these

factors are represented by parents’ desires for their children to go to a foreign country, influence by friends who are in immersion programs already and also classmates attitudes in the foreign country.
