Homelessness Narrative: National Coalition for the Homeless Essay Example
Approximately 20 to 25% of homeless people in the United States suffer from a severe mental illness, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This percentage is considerably higher than the general rate among Americans, which stands at only 6%, as reported by the National Institute of Mental Health (2009). Furthermore, in 2008, a survey conducted by the U.S. Conference of Mayors requested 25 cities to identify the primary three causes of homelessness within their communities.
Mental illness has a significant impact on homelessness, affecting both single adults and families. According to about 48% of cities, it is one of the top three causes of homelessness for single adults, while 12% mention it as a cause for homeless families. Severe mental illnesses greatly disrupt individuals' ability to perform daily activities such as self-care and managing their households. Additionally, these illnesses
...can impede individuals from establishing and maintaining stable relationships due to misinterpreting advice and reacting irrationally. As a result, caregivers, family members, and friends - who often provide crucial support systems - are frequently pushed away by those with mental illness, which increases the risk of homelessness.
According to a study conducted by Library Index in 2009, individuals with mental illnesses have a higher likelihood of experiencing homelessness compared to the general population. Research carried out within California's public mental health system discovered that around 15% of individuals with severe mental illnesses became homeless within one year (Folsom et al., 2005). This vulnerability is particularly amplified among those diagnosed with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Furthermore, poor mental health can have adverse effects on physical well-being, especially for individuals who are homeless.
