Cheating has been increasing overtime. People cheat due to too much pressure placed on them by parents and by the competition among students to get into a good college. Because of this, many resort to cheating so they could receive outstanding grades. Colleen Wenke’s, Too Much Pressure, discusses this issue among students. Wenke believes that cheating is caused mainly by schools. Schools are to be blamed because many teachers tolerate cheating, gives mild consequences to cheaters, and school places a greater emphasis on good grades rather than knowledge.

In Too Much Pressure, Colleen Wenke states that cheating has been on the rise due to the fact that many teacher accept it. Nowadays “as many as 98 percent of students . . . [have] admitted cheating”. “The teachers knew that these things went on, yet nobody seems to do anything abou

t them”. With so many people cheating, teachers have a hard time tracking down who cheated and who didn’t. Teachers assign home work everyday, and they have over a hundred students. With so much assignments pouring in to be graded, teachers usually have students peer edit the assignment or they just glance at it. The student could have just wrote down something foolish and the teacher wouldn’t notice. On account of this, many teachers think cheating is fine. Because many teachers ignore cheating that is occurring right under their noses, so many students get away with it.

Getting a zero on one assignment doesn’t hurt that much and the cheater doesn’t even learn a lesson. Due to the light consequences, students cheat even more in school. If schools cracked down harder on cheaters, students would stop cheating and they would actually have to use their brain to learn something.

Also school palaces alot of attention on letter grades. Schools and colleges alike, stresses the importance of getting straight A’s. They don’t stop to see if the person actually knows what is going on or not. So, to many people “[a]ll that matters is getting the grade” rather than the knowledge itself. To get into a good college, “[t]here is too much competition between students”. So “to get the edge over the other students in the class”, many resort to cheating. “Schools are drifting away from emphasizing learning and are emphasizing the grade instead”. If schools stop emphasizing this thought, cheating would be declining.

Cheating has been escalating in schools recently. There are many cheaters that cheat, just so they could pass and have high grades. The soaring cheating rates is mainly caused by schools everywhere. Schools created this problem because some teachers accepted cheating. Teachers also gave tolerant consequences to students that were caught cheating. Finally, another factor that contributes to this is the importance placed solely on grades. Due to these three factors cheating has become more intense
