One day, after his class, Ardal comes to see Pierce when he is impatiently waiting for Miss Purdy outside of the school and tells him not to marry Miss Purdy, but all he gets is just the treatment as a small kid for him from Pierce when he says to Ardal that: “She said that you were too short”. But Ardal still insists on his decision when he says that he wants a duel – to the death with Pierce. Pierce accepts mockingly. The he next day Ardal meets Pierce in the school yard, Pierce forgets his gun on purpose and Ardal pulls a gun on him.

Pierce says that the gun is just a toy, but Ardal tries to convince him that it is not. Miss Purdy tries to intervene but Ardal refuses. He threats Pierce, and the climax occurs when Pierce is so freaking out and says that: “I put the ring on her finger just to shut her up for a while”. The truth has come out that he never wants to marry Miss Purdy, and just proposed her to “shut her up”. Ardal then shoots Pierce and he falls to the ground. But surprisingly, it turns out that the gun is really a toy that Ardal’s father prepared for his birthday.

The falling action is that: Ms. Purdy calls him a “dickhead” and throws the ring at Pierce, then angrily calls off the engagement and breaks up with him. The film has an open ending when Miss Purdy and Ardal agree to “keep it between ourselves”. And then

she put on Ardal’s ring on her finger. Ardal says that his teacher deserves to be received everything she wants. The film ends with the scene that they continue to walk hand in hand. The protagonist of the film is Ardal Travis – a primary pupil. The story is that of a young boy, Ardal, who falls in love with his primary school teacher.

Aiming to actually win her heart, he challenges her somewhat dickish and disbelieving fiancee to a duel - to the death. He shows up in the beginning of the film with a loving gaze towards his teacher – Miss Purdy. He looks cute and smart. The way he gives his teacher a toy ring is so serious which makes her surprised but still feel special. From this point, we can see that Ardal is really brave, he has no hesitation in expressing his feeling to others although the way he talks to his teacher is somehow still childlike. After Ms. Purdy puts his ring on her finger, Ardal is very happy. He smiles during the way home.

When we see Ardal opening his ten-year planner and writing: “Marry Miss Patty” on it, we can understand how real his crush for his teacher is. Someone may think that action is ridiculous, but I myself think it’s not. It’s just the sincere feeling of a kid that is expressed bravely. Another reason to say that he really likes his teacher is when he meets her going with her fiancee – Pierce and explaining about the real-engaged ring on her finger. He looks so angry and jealous at that moment. He is

believed to be braver when coming to talk to Pierce that: “Don’t marry Miss Purdy” and “she’s mine”.

Despite being laughed at by Pierce, Ardal still insists on his action and challenges a duel with Pierce. Ardal is so contemplating when sitting in front of the closet, inside which there is a toy gun that his dad has prepared for his birthday. On the “duel” day and during the duel with Pierce, we can see that Ardal is a very decisive boy, consistent with his thought and action. He tries all ways to make Pierce speaking out the truth that he proposed Miss Purdy just to “shut her up”. The action of blowing the gun can be considered

as a punishment from Ardal to Pierce for his falsehood. Then, Ardal and Miss Purdy go home hand in hand together. During the conversation with them two, we can understand how Miss Purdy cherishes her little pupil. We can also see Ardal’s sincerity to others. He is willing to do everything good for the ones he loves. That’s a good character, especially of a young boy. Also, Ardal is a very sensible kid, which is reflected by his attitude towards Pierce when he impatiently waits for Miss Purdy. I have three words to shortly describe little Ardal: “Sencere, Brave, Sensible”.
