Good afternoon everyone today I am here to introduce you to a wonderful poet I am sure you all know. Many of us were read his poetry all through elementary school and the poetry was still referenced through high school. The poet that I am going to introduce you to is Shel Silverstein. Shel Silverstein was born on September 25, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. He once stated that and I quote “When I was a kid I would have much rather been good at baseball or a hit with the girls, but I couldn’t play ball, I couldn’t dance so I started to draw and write. Over time he has written 11 children’s books and cartoons for other things , however it might surprise you to know that not only did he write books, but he also wrote music as well. Some of

the people that he wrote songs for were Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Jerry Reed, and others. One of his books “Where the Sidewalk Ends," won the New York Times Outstanding Book Award in 1974, and went on to win the Michigan Young Readers' Award in 1981, and the George G. Stone Award in 1984. has written many books for children that is not all that he has written. While he was serving in the military he worked as a cartoonist for the Pacific Stars and Stripes, which is a military publication.

After completing is military duty, he was hired to do cartoons for Playboy. Who would have though a man who wrote such wonderful poems for children could also do cartoons for the Playboy magazine? If all that wasn’t enough he also wrote some plays. This man was very busy though out his entire life. I am truely honored to get to introduce him to you. Since I was young I have loved his poetry. He makes reading fun and even interesting. He is one of the reasons that I started writing poetry myself.

Even today being the college student that I am I still love to sit down and read his poetry. I would have to say that the book titled falling up is my favorite. The reason I first fell in love with this book was because of the title. When you’re a kid thinking about falling up is truly mind boggling. I am now going to recite my favorite poem in the book. It is titled the same as the book falling up. I tripped on my shoelace and I fell up to the roof tops, up over the town, up past the tree tops up over the mountains, up where the colors blend into the sounds.

But it got me so dizzy when I looked around I got sick to my stomach and I threw down. The reason I like this poem so much is because when I

was a kid actually thinking of being able to go up above and see all the stuff the kid was talking about in the book was truly something that I wanted to do. I hope you all enjoy hearing him speak about everything that he has accomplished throughout his live and his poetry. And I thank you for letting me be the one to introduce him to you. So without any further delay here he is She Silverstein.
