Apart from my god, myself and my family, I serve my country the most. While working I provide services for my countrymen individually. I direct patrons to the areas they seek and assist them in decision making. By paying taxes, I help the country as a whole. It is, in part, what I give that keeps the roads maintained, schools in session, the elderly healthy and safe, and art in the public eye. Indeed, I help pay for political campaigns, research on fruit flies, and intelligence on drug use, jail bars and policemen.

I have a part in maintaining telescopes, planting trees, funding theaters, and restoring old buildings. I help fund watersheds, build dams, research diseases, enforce food safety standards and decode the human genome. Furthermore, I help fund the nation’s defense. I pay for uniforms for soldiers, tanks and weapons. Indeed, I even pay for the maintenance of nuclear technology. My job, by itself, might not be prestigious, but by paying my taxes, I serve the country in many ways – simply and grandly. My goal is to keep America running strongly. People will know whether or not my goal has been met by the way their lives are affected. It is not at all important that my role in the process is known, because it is small and much like the role of other Americans. Yet, as the country faces economic turmoil and social change, every American’s role becomes much more noticeable and important. If I do not pay my taxes, I may help lead the country down a road of poverty and pain. If, on the other hand, I do my part and keep working to pay taxes, I may have a role in lifting the county out of a mess and that would be a fine thing, indeed.
