Legally Blonde is a 2001 movie directed by Robert Luketic that narrates the life of Elle Woods. Elle Woods is a young pretty blonde girl that studies fashion merchandising in California. Elle is in love with a young man that has high aspirations to become a politician by the time he is thirty years old. He and Ellen had dated a few months but he decides to break up with her since he is going to go to Harvard school and needs to have a more serious relationship. Elle is disappointed and decides to challenge herself by applying for Harvard school. Her goal is to have a serious profession that will allow her to be with the love of her life. Elle’s friends and family don’t have faith on her since they think that she is not smart enough for j
...oining such prestigious institution. Elle studies hard and manages to get accepted at Harvard Law School.
Once in Harvard, Elle realizes that it is an environment that she is not used to. People dress differently and they do not look like the fun people she usually spends time with. Elle is confident that she can accomplish her goals. Because she studies hard, she manages to be part of an important murder trial that one of her professors is working on. Her professor is impressed that she is not only pretty but she is also smart that he suggests that they have an affair. Elle rejects him but her self-esteem goes down and she tries to leave Harvard. However, Elle’s friends and some professors at Harvard encourage her to stay and to show
people her great potential. She ends up being the lawyer of the person accused of murder. Elle discovers who the real murderer is and wins the case. She graduates from Harvard Law School and gets an invitation to join Harvard’s Law firm.
Concept 1 – Personality
Elle is an extrovert as is referenced by her involvement in sororities and multiple social events, as well as an intuitive type personality who goes with what she feels in her heart even if it may not always be logical. She has an internal locus of control as evidenced by her belief that she can change anything in her life if she wants to, including getting acceptance into Harvard Law School. She has a high self efficacy. She holds the belief that she can do anything she chooses to do proficiently, even if the people around her, such as friends and parents, do not believe in her. Elle is a low self-monitor, as evidenced by her clothes and mannerisms which stick out from her environment when she arrives at law school. One characteristic of her personality is her self-esteem, which goes up and down depending on the situation that surrounds her. For example, her self-esteem is strong when she gets accepted into Harvard but it is low when her professor comes onto her. Lastly, she seems to possess an overall positive effect, choosing to focus on what she does well rather than dwelling on the negative in her life. All in all, Elle’s personality shapes the movie and influences the behavior of every supporting actor.
Concept 2 – Conflict
Intrarole conflict: Even though people do
not tell Elle directly what to do, they imply that she should behave differently since she is in a law school. She faces conflict because her friends tell her that she should be herself and shouldn’t change her personality. Another type of conflict she experiences is personal-role conflict. She is expected to behave in a way that clashes with her personality. For example, she likes wearing clothes with vivid colors; however, she wears dark colors because that is how lawyers typically dress.
Another conflict Elle deals with is when her professor tells her that she could have a bright future as a lawyer. However, he implies that she can accomplish that goal by having an affair with him. This conflict makes Elle’s self-esteem go down and she decides to leave Harvard.
