This makes it important for us to understand, the barriers and advantages of communicating via the internet, and other electronic and wireless forms of communication as it pertains to cross-cultural communication. Developing understanding, training, and educating individuals and organizations on the dynamics of each cultural demographic or diasporas’ they socialize or do business with is vitally important to effective communication, as there are various components to take into consideration such as religion, culture, politics, trade and export agreements and practices, history, and international relations. require a certain amount of competency, protocol, intercultural skills, and understanding rather by trial and error, practice, formal training, or education. This is especially critical in the use of technologies such as social media, emailing, ecommerce, blogging, twitting, texting, and other forms of electronic and ireless communications, where the sender must clearly and appropriately convey or share information and intent appropriately to the receiver(s).

Topic Today, we are going to discuss and review How to Communicate Effectively in Cross-Cultural Communication. Credibility Statement My name is Saundrea Grant, and I am the Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of LQ Enterprise, a boutique consulting firm, consisting of professional service providers, who specialize in Communications and Business Development. LQ Enterprise was founded in 1999, when I began my pilgrimage into entrepreneurialism. I have a rather extensive background in administration, sales, marketing, communications and business development.

In this capacity I have had the honor of meeting and working with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, General Colin Powell, US Surgeon General Dr. Louis W. Sullivan, Morehouse College, San Francisco 49ers, Santa Clara County Fire Department, Contempo Realty, Boy’s and Girls Club of America, Lencoler Clinic, and many more wonderful organizations.. In 2001 I departed from PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the number one accounting firm in the world, and I plunged fulltime into developing my own company, providing the same services an a consultant and independent contractor. While I did have some college courses under my belt, the bulk of my skills and experience came from on the job training, research and training programs.

I have received numerous rewards and acknowledgments throughout my professional career that expands over 25 years in my current field of work

and studies. I was literally propelled to corporate sales from administration as a direct result of my ability to communicate effectively and my customer service skills, which all require attention to detail, which is another one of my strengths. I soon realized, that communication was a talent I had possessed since a child, and so I decided to go into marketing to further develop my skills and desire to be in the field. Once in marketing I came to realize, that my passion went even further. I enjoyed sharing information, creative writing and creating graphic campaigns. I also had developed a desire to help small business, startups and nonprofits.

I have generated in excess of 3 million dollars, working with, developing and supporting annual campaign and other funding initiatives. My current studies and professional endeavors directly involve international business, affairs, and relations, with a concentration in Africa-African American social, economical, cultural, and political practices and behaviors. I am currently working with the African/Hispanic Trade Commission on intercultural trade and exportation communications. LQ Enterprise hereinafter referred to as LQ will be developing the communications for the website as well as other collateral for the organization. We are working on and developing projects that include several countries in Africa, India, and Dubai.

I have over 15 years of international business experience, a great deal which I received working in PriceWaterhouseCoopers National Transfer Pricing Department, and Hitachi Japan and nonprofit organizations. My organizations cross-cultural objective is to bridge the social and economical gaps between, small, medium and large organizations around the world, using technology and other forms of communication. This is carried out through making assessments, conducting market and industry

research, analysis reporting, and then developing strategic plans with strong emphasis on cross cultural communications, so LQ can assist organizations with meeting their communication objectives.

Last but not least there is implementation, where we also provide training, development and administrative support. Our Exec’s For Rent program is where we contract ourselves out individually or as a team to the organization to assist in the day to day logistics of keeping with their organizational plans and objectives, while providing executive coverage, as typically found, with retained lawyers or accountants representing an organization.

Importance It is very important that business managers possess a high level of competency at it pertains to cross-cultural communication, and that through your competency, you must develop hiring practices, strategic plans, and training programs, for your team and organizations, that are effective and appropriate, not only for the sake of business development, but also risk management and communications, which can both be effected negatively if protocol is not put into policies and practices (Wikipedia, 2011).

Sub-Point #1: Interdisciplinary orientation Cross-cultural communication tries to bring together such relatively unrelated areas as cultural anthropology and established areas of communication. Its core is to establish and understand how people from different cultures communicate with each other. Relying on data collected from in-depth interviews and participant observation, as well as secondary data, compares the cross-cultural communication processes between cultures, for example easterners and westerners in an Asian cultural context, namely, that of Taiwan, as well as the potential influences of Confucianism and the theory of “manners of different orders. ” Our data reveal that westerners tend to communicate with Taiwanese people in an outspoken and brusque way and to make few changes during the communication process. On the contrary, easterners are inclined to communicate with a gentler approach and make adjustments for the local culture. We also find that Confucianism and the theory of manners of different orders have strong influences on cross-cultural communication strategies and performance.

This reinforces the notion that cross cultural communication competency, protocol and research are relevant and important. Research provides evidence to support the arguments that the theory of manners of different orders may play an even more significant role than the individualism–collectivism paradigm in explaining the causes of better communicational performance in Taiwan and possibly mainland China. Implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research are provided based on these findings (Yaolung, J. 2011).

Sub-Point #2: Effects As we stand at the threshold of the twenty-first century we are in a unique position to enjoy the benefits of freedom of accessibility to information enabled by advances of the information age.

The implications of cross-cultural transmission of language are many and will grow in the future as the world becomes more “wired”. We need to ensure that language conversion methods alter the original meaning

of the text as little as possible. Walter Benjamin has stated that, “All the great texts contain their potential translation between the lines” (Benjamin, W. 1997) and if this is true the task of the translator is daunting. However, it provides us with a worthy challenge for the 21st Century, the effort to ensure that minimal meaning is “lost in translation” (Speirs Plettner, M. 1999) Companies are increasingly taking advantage of international market expansion opportunities abroad.

Even the smaller markets are becoming quickly saturated with startups meeting the supply and demand need of the various markets demands for access, products and services that can be easily and affordably made available, such as home-goods, and manufacturing items. This can be seen through the numerous organizations using offshore manpower for as well as professional services. There are also examples such as ebay, Blogger. com, and Groupon. com, that makes it convenient to purchase goods and service via the internet globally. These organizations had to develop strong cultural relations protocol, and hiring practices to secure the global advertisement and opportunities that makes it the powerhouse it is today.

Educational institutions have recognized the need for cross-cultural communications programs around the world, and are educating professionals to guide organizations through developing and implementing cross-cultural practices and protocol. Main Point # 3: Advantages and Disadvantages of Cross Cultural Business and Relationships. Culture is often described as a set of layers. There is the invisible layer of behaviors and practices, and there is the invisible layer of values. All of these components are important when cultivating relationships and conducting business with individuals, employees and organizations of a different culture and/or background.

While there are

tangible and intangible advantages of cross cultural relationships, there are also disadvantages, however, we at LQ Enterprise, believe that through research, planning and implementation, individuals and organizations can bridge the social and economical gaps that create the boundaries, that we believe, can be overcome providing organizations do the necessary research work to meet the necessary literal requirements to communicate effectively across the board…. or should I say borders!

Sub-Point#1: Disadvantages of Cross Cultural Communication for Organizations Some of the disadvantages of trying to conduct business or cultivate relations globally are for one the obvious…. demographics. With face-to-face communication still ranking number one, in this technical environment, it is always best when the opportunity presents itself, to physically interact with your target market. We also understand that this is not always and option or logical especially with mass communications and global objectives.

There are currently 192 countries and within each of these countries, there is an even larger breakdown of cultures. It would appear to be almost physically impossible for any individual or organization to be competent in all the knowledge of all the cultures practices, values and behaviors. The amount of man power along with other tools and resources would cost a fortune that even I would not want to have the task of figuring out. This is why it is so important that your organizations strategically align yourselves and identify your target market. 70% of businesses have lost out on business opportunities because of cultural differences and incompetency.

Smaller businesses and medium and large sized businesses effected by the current economy, really have to contend with deciding which markets to go after because of restricted capital and

human resources. This is where outsourcing can change and level the playing field for them to contend with bigger and more financially stable businesses, as well as other small business competition. In today’s economic climate, many smaller, medium and larger businesses are holding on to their capital and not taking advantage of professional service providers who can in the long run, as well as upfront save them a small fortune while propelling them to a higher level, which will generate more business and revenue. Another critical disadvantage facing business managers and their organizations is, breaking into diverse markets.

Ever heard the phrase you only get one chance to make a first impression? Well that holds very true. This is why protocol and training are so important for organizations. Risk management is a growing profession primarily to keep up with communications technology. Unfortunately, there are more than just unprofessional and culturally insensitive communication/correspondence that can have a negative impact on cross cultural relations and business, there is also cell phones with texting , and more and more people and businesses are using wireless technology to transmit information, intent, and

sentiments, liability and protocol issues must be looked at seriously and differently when considering the new technologies on the market to include the wireless devices available today.
