Jefferson wrote, "…That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government…" Clearly describe three examples from any period of American History when Americans attempted to follow these words.One example of a time that Americans attempted to alter or change the U.S. Government was during the civil war. At this time, Southern (Confederate) states tried to withdraw from the union. Another example is how since the 1990s, Texas has had certain pleas to leave the nation and become the Republic of Texas. An even more recent example is members and candidates of the Tea Party. Ironically named after the Boston Tea Party of 1773, these people claim to want to get back to the nation originally founded by the f


orefathers of America; however they petition in many varieties to attempt to overthrow, alter or succeed from the U.S.

2. What do you think Jefferson meant by the following: "Prudence, indeed will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes…?" What might be some examples of light and transient causes in today's government? Explain.Some examples of these light and transient causes would be, for one, the recent issues in the economy. Although, economic recession is not good, it is not a cause to disband a government ad it is not always entirely due to the government. Another example would be new Obama-care. country. Another light and transient cause could be anything from Social Security to a leader of a different democratic party takes over.

Jefferson wrote, "…But when a long train of abuses and usurpations … evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism…" What do some groups in today's society (Examples:militia men, Communist Party, skinheads) argue are the abuses and usurpations of today's government? Name some groups that fit into this classification. You are NOT limited to the groups listed as examples. Do you agree or disagree with their viewpoints? Explain. You need to describe the groups and explain the abuses and usurpations that they object to fully.

One group that I can think of off the top of head that definitely opposes American government is the terrorist group Al-Qaeda. Not only do they oppose American government but they really oppose all western countries’ governments. They are a radical group that believes that the entirety of all governments will collapse when the U.S. falls and they consequently believe that these governments need to be replaced and taken over by Al-Qaeda leaders of the Sunni Islamic beliefs. I believe that this is entirely severe and irrational. I do not think that all of their problems with the U.S. are accurate however America certainly is not perfect either.

On a slightly less severe note, another group in today’s society that opposes U.S. government is militia men. They believe that government should be localized to individual counties and that these counties should be independent. They do not believe that they should be burdened to pay federal taxes or that they should have to register

vehicles and any government duties that stray from local government. I do not believe that this is efficient for the current world that we live in. We can learn from history, in the times of the middle ages when Europeans lived in independent small kingdoms or tribes to more accurately describe. This prevents cultural exchange throughout the world and slows down development of new ideas and innovations.

4. Reread the list of grievances against King George III. Do any seem frivolous or repetitive? Explain. Were the colonies justified in declaring their independence? Explain.I do not feel that any of them seem frivolous as long as they can defend them; however several of them seem to be repetitive. Many seem to just be elaborations of each other when I really look and think about it. I do see however that the style of writing that Jefferson was writing (in a decree or list type of style) would more effective and assertive to convey his point than to join the similar grievances together. I do think the colonies were justified in declaring independence because the King was trying to drain the colonies and unfairly treat them by forcing and imposing laws and regulations and other invasions of them without the colonies having a say in the English government.

5. Select the sentence or phrase from the Declaration of Independence that you feel is most important in its application to you as a citizen in today's society. Copy and paste it into your assignment followed with an explanation of why you selected it.I would regret to be cliché with this considering this is my first homework

assignment for this class, but I really have no other ways to connect to the Declaration of Independence in today’s society (Besides small connections between my parents’ rules and the grievances against King Henry III, small joke).

So therefore, I must say that the most significant phrase that impacts me from the ol’ Declaration of Independence would have to be: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” I feel that this really applies to me because in today’s society people judge each other and value others less or more for one reason or another. I always try to remember that we are all human equals who deserve just as many opportunities.
