Treating actual trauma injuries, healing abscess, attending to people with eye infections, and removing fragments of shrapnel are just some of the duties that I have to carry out as a “doc. ” I was in the US Navy as a medical corpsman for five fruitful years, and my experience thought me that saving another person’s life could be frustrating and fulfilling. Nevertheless, I had certain expectations about this career before pursuing it, and I already pictured myself succeeding in the field that I have chosen to put into practice.
For five years, I have learned an incredible amount of things and gained more knowledge in addition to what I acquired from graduate school. I have a master’s degree in health care management and a
...bachelor’s degree in health and sciences. Being a corpsman is harder than one might realize, as it is a risk that one has to take. Together with my fellow corpsmen, I had to undergo the same training for the marines. I had to learn how to carry armours, weapons and ammunitions, and helmet. Most especially, I had to learn about the medical gears.
I know this is not the job any man may point out as something ideal, but from the very first time that I got a hold of this responsibility that I must face, I already liked the idea of helping the marines who are fighting for the freedom of our country. I think that being able to treat them is one of the best contributions a medical practitioner can do, and this is the very reason why instead of working in a hospital,
I kept my conviction of staying in the US navy and use the education I gained to help the marines. I will never forget all the images that I saw and have encountered.
They are the testimony of how I was able to succeed in this field, and they showed me my purpose as a person. My experiences made me realize that I can never just sit back and watch people suffer excruciating pain. Although I have enjoyed all the aspects of being in the service, I am ready to take a change of direction, not because I got tired of being a medical corpsman, but because I know that knowledge and experience are something you have to spread. I believe that once you get a little bit of knowledge and experience, they grow on you and make you grow. However, this growth can only take you to a certain extent.
Thus, to grow further, I know that I have to explore other fields where I can apply my knowledge and experience. I believe that being a part of the air force medical service corps as a health administrator officer is the big leap that I am willing to take. For me, this so-called “change of pace” is not a change at all because I would still have to work as part of a medical group. However, from my own perspective, this new experience will be an opportunity for me to further increase my medical know-how. In return, I would be able to educate others with my own experiences. I do not think that I could ever leave what I have started.
justify">Being in the service once more fills me with excitement, because I would be able to apply the leadership and resource-management skills I have in order to ensure that the health of our peace advocates is well maintained. In many ways, the things that I have learned from my five-year tenure as a medical corpsman would be able to help me adjust with the new environment, not only because I have all the knowledge of the principles and practice of health care administration, but also because the things I have learned taught me how to adapt and overcome extreme situations and not to wait for an assignment to rise into action.
What will be truly venerating about this job is not only the opportunity for me to put into practice the education that I have, but the idea that there will be a constant learning from the people that I am about to meet. My interest in the field of healthcare has increased over the years. The casualties and dangers were never a hindrance for me to embrace this practice. Instead, they intensified my desire to promote high-quality health care among people.
Every time I wake up, there is this need within me to continue my dedication in this field. Perhaps, it is because this is the dream that I have pursued, and this is the chance that I have to carry out the responsibility that have challenged me ever since. Most of all, I believe that I have consistently proved myself to be more than what others expected me to be, for I have never excused myself from a work that many
people are discouraged to take.
