Adjusting to a new government, similar to adjusting to a new culture requires learning and adapting to new rules and norms. Dealing with this kind of change comes with new lessons, new understandings of life and new perspectives. Individuals have to learn things from scratch, learn to understand the culture and most importantly, people have to stop making assumptions. Moreover, a new culture requires a new level of open-mindedness. This is not always an easy process to go through.
However, through education, creating valuable relationships and a positive attitude, it is possible to gradually get used to the new environment. One of the most important ways of adapting to a new culture is through education. For one, it is important to learn and understand the new rules and traditions
...that you are getting into. It is also important to not only learn through listening but through asking questions. In addition, if there are things that are not understood, it is helpful to clarify them before getting into potentially awkward and confusing situations.
For example, an immigrant in a new country can go to a newcomer’s centre which will have activities, classes and even people that will guide him/her as he/she learns and adapts to his/her new culture. According to kende, “[people] can learn English easily in Canada “(135) . It shows that, people can easily learn a new language. For instance, some immigrant has questions about where to get a job, how to get into school, how the government works, where to learn the language if there is a language barrier and so on, this will be the place to as
the questions.
This would typically be the kind of place that has enough resources to take care of the newcomer’s needs. Therefore, once the newcomer learns about the how the culture works, he/she will feel confident enough to venture out on his/her own and experience the new culture to its fullest. Another valuable way to adapt successfully into a new culture is through the relationships that are created. It is helpful to make new friends that have already lived in the culture and that know the unspoken rules and norms that cannot necessarily be learned through classes.
These should be friends who are willing to advice you through your mistakes and who are patient enough to slowly teach you about the new lifestyles that you are taking up. Inaddition, the good thing about friends is that they create an informal setting for individual to learn so that you will not be as embarrassed or as uncomfortable when people make a mistake or have a question. According to Kende,”many refuges who now called Canada home (124). it implies that, immigrant has a good relationship towards Canada.
In addition, Friends will make the atmosphere light and friendly so that you are able to adjust without feeling too much pressure. Therefore, relationships will help to adapting a new culture. Finally, it is important to have a positive attitude throughout these new experiences. for one,iIt will not always be easy to get used to a new culture but it helps to be aware of that and to maintain a positive attitude regardless. According to kende,” thank u Canada we love you “(135). this shows that people
have positive attitude towards to a new adopting country.
People should not be afraid to make mistakes but instead learn from them. Individuals can take this as an opportunity to grow and learn as a person while at the same time remembering that there is not only one way to do something, just that this might be how it is done in this particular culture. It is useful to keep in touch with your previous culture so that you do not feel like you have lost yourself, just that you have added a new culture to your life. In conclusion, it is possible to gradually get used to the new environment through education, creating valuable relationships and a positive attitude. oreover, it is important to remember that there is no one black and white way to adapt a new culture or even to a new government.
However, these are potentially useful ways to start. It is always important not to isolate from the new culture but to try to be as active and as involved as possible. Isolating will hurt people in more ways than you can imagine in your personal, academic or even mental life so it is important to keep at it and to seek help when needed. Adjusting to change is not always fun and exciting, it can require hard work and patience but the end results are absolutely invaluable.
