In the last couple of years, the Philippines has experienced notable transformations with the introduction of the K-12 educational system, known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013. While it may not be on par with other nations yet, this system has allowed Filipinos to enhance their economic standing.
The Department of Education (DepEd), the Commission of Higher Education (CHED), and the Technical Educational and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) have decided to implement an academic calendar shift on or before the expected deadline of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.
To align our academic calendar with international universities and safeguard the community from typhoons, it is crucial to promptly execute the program. Nonetheless, it is uncertain whether the Filipino population is ready for the impending modifications.
The
...Philippines is currently dealing with several challenges including the destructive impact of Typhoon Yolanda, the controversy surrounding the Pork Barrel Scam, and the implementation of the K-12 system. It is proving to be difficult to maintain order amidst these issues. Nonetheless, top universities such as Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU), De La Salle University (DLSU), University of Santo Tomas (UST), and University of the Philippines (UP) are prepared to embrace this shift and support the country in adapting to these changes.
The four universities have agreed to gradually implement this system together, making small progressions until 2015. However, if the full implementation happens in the next year, both students and teachers will be given a one-time vacation lasting five to six months to help them adapt to this significant change. Thus, summer classes will be prolonged so that students can continue enrichin
their intellectual capacities during this postponement.
Seminars will be held for teachers and professors to introduce them to the upcoming changes for the academic year. This transition not only safeguards educational institutions from natural calamity disruptions but also offers students more opportunities to engage with foreign university students. "Usually, ASEAN countries' universities schedule certain events during the peak of the Philippine academic year."
According to Teresita G. Domalanta, the former DepEd director of the National Capital Region (NCR), this change aims to enhance the collaboration between local and foreign students. However, rural areas in the Philippines may struggle to comply with these regulations due to limited exposure and training opportunities.
These regions are already adapted to the current curriculum and academic calendar, making it difficult to change paradigms at short notice. However, with appropriate training and sufficient time, these regions will eventually align with the current educational structure of both K-12 and the new academic calendar shift. The implementation of this academic calendar shift will bring the country closer to achieving the planned change for the decade: the AEC 2015.
By implementing the academic calendar shift, school disruptions in the mid-months will end. Students will have more opportunities to participate in events and activities even outside the country, which will bring a new level of freedom that the country has been desperately seeking. This implementation will mark the beginning of a new journey for the Filipino people, as it will greatly improve their economic status. As a countryman of the Philippines, I firmly believe that the academic calendar shift should be pursued in the coming years for the betterment of our
nation. One Vision, One Identity, One Community.
