Hannah, a teenager, moved to a new town only to be faced with classmates she couldn't trust. These unfaithful peers spread rumors about her, damaging her reputation. Seeking comfort, Hannah joined a poetry class in search of happiness but to no avail. Feeling ignored and unloved, she considered suicide as her next step.
In both Thirteen Reasons Why and If I Stay, Hannah and Mia face life or death situations. Despite seeking help and companionship, Mr. Porter did nothing to prevent Hannah from ending her own life. This left her feeling hopeless and insignificant, leading her to consume pills as a means of suicide. On the other hand, Mia finds herself in a coma but reflects on her life throughout the novel. Similarly, Hannah records tapes that revisit important moments in her own life.

Quietly, she observes her friends and extended family grappling with the sorrow of losing her parents and younger sibling, as well as the uncertainty surrounding her own fate. In contrast to Mia's encounter, Hannah felt abandoned and lacked a definite path or someone to seek solace in.
The limited involvement of Hannah's parents in her life, as scarcely indicated in the book, implies that they had minimal influence on her. Instead, it was the influence of others that significantly impacted her and pushed her towards contemplating suicide. Hannah's own descent into hopelessness directly resulted from feeling deserted by those close to her. Clay Jenson plays a central role as both narrator and mentor
offering insight into Hannah Baker's haunting final moments. A significant portion of the narrative is revealed through Clay's perspectives, providing valuable comprehension of his character.
His character played a significant role in the story as the "Good Guy" who Hannah was eager to know due to all the positive things she had heard about him. Unlike others, he didn't negatively affect Hannah's life and never harmed, deceived, betrayed, or exploited her for personal gain. Clay, my favorite character in the story, was crucial as getting to know Hannah might have influenced her decision regarding suicide.
Even though Clay is seen as a dynamic character, Mr. Porter, an older and less prominent character, also has a significant role. Being the twelfth and final person on Hannah's list, it becomes evident that he had the potential to prevent her suicide by reaching out to a mental health professional or informing her parents about her suicidal thoughts.
As adults, our dependence on them includes protection from bullies, assistance in difficult situations, and a boost to our self-assurance. However, Mr. Porter, Hannah's guidance counselor, fails to meet these expectations. Some argue that because he is an adult, he bears more responsibility for Hannah's downfall compared to the younger individuals who may not fully grasp the consequences of their actions. Conversely, Tony plays a vital role in ensuring the distribution of all the tapes to everyone involved. He is well-liked by others and that is why he is not included in Hannah's list.
After Hannah's suicide, she sends Clay a copy of the tapes, prompting him to inform her parents. Tony dedicates his time to monitoring
the twelve individuals listed and ensuring they carry out Hannah's wishes. While some may argue that Hannah overlooked it due to her unstable mindset, Tony plays an important role. Throughout this journey, he supports Clay by expressing concern for his welfare and making sure he is safe before allowing him to leave the car. It is possible that Tony goes unrecognized as a hero in this situation.
