Deviant Subculture Ethnography and Developing Essay Example
It is a common practice for most cultures both in the United States of America and many other countries in the world to set rules of work and certain norms that need to be observed. Helping people in the society like Charles Grill did is one of the values that one is expected to possess. Drug abuse at work is a prohibited practice by any culture no matter where the state is. People are always encouraged to be educated and be of help to the society. Children are taken to school at an early age with the aim of making them useful to the society. The reduction is provided till one is an adult and can make good decisions on their own. In the USA, the code of dressing is very much monitored and tidiness is paramount. Therefore, people are supp
...osed to report at work in a very presentable dressing code. That is why most people in the cities are seen walking around in suits. Despite this fact, there are those subcultures that do not honor these norms. They are referred to deviant subcultures. They do things in their own way that does not conform to the agreed code of conduct. In their opinion, rendering help to society is not an issue that should be given priority. (Montoya & Pittinsky, 2012) This is according to Charles Grill. In this ethnography, I have used some deviant people to the values that Mr. Grill believed in.
As I was in the endeavor of choosing a place to base my study, I chose to settle on a wholesale shop in my neighborhood in Ohio. In this place, there was
a typical expression of deviance and no one questioned that. This is because the people are used to that kind of behavior hence they did not care much. The shop has quite a number of workers. Each one of them had their own dressing code. Some of them were in dirty attire. I asked for permission from the manager by the name John to have some interview and observation in the premises. After being granted the permission, I went around and decided to interview four individuals. These were David, the delivery truck driver, Vincent the store keeper, Gideon, a high school dropout who was a cleaner and Collin who was cashier in the shop.
They were so eager talk to me and I liked the curiosity but I hated the looks with equal measure. No one in the businesses like banks, which needed to build a reputation, could be ready to employ any of them. Even the manager himself was good looking but from his eyes, I could an element of drug abuse. I think with his responsibility, he had to look better than the rest. Most of the ladies who were there looked good. To me, they were the face of the business.
By observation, I could see that most of the people were not sober. I turned to John and asked him, “Do you mind your workers coming to work drunk?” He kept silent for a while and for a moment I had a feeling I had offended him. Then he smiled and said, “As long as it does not affect the business, I do not care” That came to me as a shock because
I thought at least he could say something as a point of disagreement with the behavior. He did not. I had to take my leave and talk to the four guys.
We moved to a compartment within the warehouse. It had a window and a door that acted as an entrance into the premises as well as an exit to the rear part of the building. Before I even greeted them, David had a roll of pot in his mouth and a flame in his right hand. In a few seconds he was outside and smoke was oozing from his moustache and nostrils in the form of a steam engine train. Vincent joined him and in a minute they were back. I turned to David and asked, “Don’t you feel like you may lose your job for do that?” He cleared his throat and said, “I have been working here for two years and I have always done that. No trouble at all.” Vincent came and said, “I suppose there is no problem at all as long as I do my job. This is my life.”
I had to deviate from the questions on drugs. I asked as a general question on whether they thought by pursuing education to higher levels and helping the society could be important to them. Each of them looked at me in a way to suggest that they were not ready to answer that. Gideon came out and said, “I do not think too much of education matters a lot to me. I am here today without much of it.” The others nodded their heads in agreement. They could not notice how
different education made individuals.
I did not want to say anything against that. If anyone was in my position and they were taking my side, one could wonder where our norms are with regard to that part of the state. According to Collin, there are people who use very hard drugs in the neighboring businesses such as cocaine and heroin. That left me wondering. Gideon who had been quiet all that time came in and said. “I know this is not a common scenario in most places but as long as everything is safe and we are shielded from the cops, nothing is there to worry about. What matters is how smart you are.” To me that was rather naive but I had to keep that to myself. We talked for some time and I studied how deviant people in this place were to the norms that a person from the other places observing the norms could strongly embrace. The four were high and they proudly talked about it. It was weird to be looking at things being done that way. I was pondering quietly in my mind on what could come of us if every subculture in the USA could be deviant in its own way. The outcome could be detrimental.
As it was seen on profiling, and I will quote, “Mr. Grill made appoint that Volunteering is great and wonderful which requires individuals to offer both their income and strength in order to make the society a greater place. He narrates how his dad despite being a conservative and a religious man, in a joint workforce together invested in a local salvation army where they
were able to acquire a small church building and always helped the less fortunate people in the church and the society. His father was a very religious man believing that actions of men and women are the one which should be used to judge and he quote his dad “your actions speak loud I can’t hear what you are saying” he was always wearing a shirt which was white and a suit with a tie where when he came home he just removed his jacket and loosened his tie. Being that religious he made sure that gill’s mother was not wearing slacks in public as according to him this was very suggestive. “on the other hand, I offered both material and mental support to Hillside Christian orphanage in Korea” he recalls.”” Mr. Grill is a totally different man from these people.
If an average person in the USA was asked what they knew about our norm, one could say, working hard, getting educated and getting a good job. By observation, it can be seen that people from this place deviate from the norms and are behaving in a manner to suggest that they really don’t care about our norms. It is a behavior that a normal educated person could wonder how it comes up. One who has been taught to help the society like Mr. Grill will be very surprised on how some people can deviate from the societal norms. It was a great experience for me in the study and I learnt that not all people stick to the norms of the society.
